OAKLAND — A public-private partnership with Microsoft Corp. and Declaration Networks Group Inc. will expand rural broadband access in Garrett County.
The three-year agreement announced Tuesday will expand broadband internet access to approximately 65,000 people in Garrett County and two counties in the Eastern Shore of Virginia as part of Microsoft’s Rural Airband Initiative. The expansion to unserved homes and businesses will use a combination of fixed wireless and television white space deployments.
“Reliable access to high-speed internet is critical for Maryland’s small businesses, families and students to thrive in our 21st century economy,” Gov. Larry Hogan said. “We are working diligently to eliminate the rural broadband gap and ensure that all Marylanders have the opportunity to access trusted, cost-effective broadband solutions.”

Exhibits of both visual and performing arts by all local students will be on display until 2 p.m.; the Garrett County Arts Council will host its make-and-take craft room with are teachers, with fabric totes from Samantha Funding the Arts will be available for coloring; and live performances will take place every half hour. This is a free event.

McHENRY — The eighth-annual spring scholarship benefit, hosted by the Garrett College Foundation, will be held April 27 at The Lodge at Wisp Resort in McHenry.
Final preparations are being made, including an exciting Casino Night, hosted by the Deep Creek Lake and Oakland Lions Clubs, as part of this year’s benefit theme, “Boots and Bling.”
“The Deep Creek and Oakland Lions Clubs are happy to partner with the Garrett College Foundation to raise funds for the students. ACCIDENT — For the first time, the Western Maryland Regional FFA agriculture mechanics and public speaking contests were held in Garrett County.
The competition was held at the Garrett College Career and Technical Center in Accident on March 15 with 65 students from Northern, Southern, Clear Spring, Hancock, Smithsburg, Boonsboro and Boonsboro middle participating.
Students engaged in creed speaking, prepared public speaking, extemporaneous public speaking and agriculture mechanics.
