Springs Folk Festival this weekend

56th Annual Springs Folk Festival
October 4 & 5, 2013
The Springs Folk Festival invites you to join in the celebration of the arts, skills and labors of our forefathers. Watch the men and women baking bread and weaving, the men hewing logs and threshing grain and the children enjoying themselves on an old-time hayride. The lilting notes of blue grass groups, gospel music and children singing a capella fill the air with continuous performances in an enclosed program building. Of course, the Mountain Anthems singing close harmony is always a thrill.

Mountain Anthems

The Springs Museum on the grounds boasts thousands of artifacts of the Casselman Valley area.

An Amazing Maze

Sep. 19, 2013

Autumn must be upon the mountaintop, because it is time again for folks to find their way through the Accident Corn Maze, located just north of Northern Garrett High School. The maze is open now, and will remain in operation through Nov. 3. The hours are Fridays from noon until 10 p.m.; Saturdays, noon to 9 p.m.; and Sundays, 2 to 6 p.m. Guests may also make appointments for weekday visits. This year’s “drawing” salutes the efforts of Warm the Children, a program of The Republicannewspaper and the GFWC Civic Club of Oakland that annually provides new, warm clothing and footwear to hundreds of local children in need. Upon close observation, readers may see that design includes mittens, a hat and scarf, a cup of hot chocolate, and a snowflake. A portion of the maze proceeds this year will go to Warm the Children, as announced by creators and operators Bob and Alice Bender. The entry fee is $8 for those age 11 and older; $4 for ages 3-10, and free for those 2 and younger. Discounts are available for groups of 15 or more, and for school groups. Hayrides are also available for $2 per person. “The corn maze is a fun and educational adventure for families, churches, and school students,” a spokesperson said. “The maze is formed on more than 10 acres of property. We also have a playground, duck races, and pedal tractor races.” There are pavilions available for reservations, and guests may also tour the working dairy farm and feed the calves. Persons may contact the farm at 301-616-6111 to schedule a visit.

deep-creeks-got-talentBenefits HART for Animals

The Honi-Honi Bar is proud to present our 6th Annual Deep Creek’s Got Talent! fundraiser event on Saturday, June 15th, 2013 at the Honi-Honi Bar.  Last year, through the generosity and support of contestants, sponsors, and local businesses, we were able to raise over $13,000, for the Dove Center of Garrett County.  Over the past five years, through the generosity and support of contestants, sponsors, businesses and the community, Deep Creek’s Got Talent! has raised more than $68,000 for local charities and organizations.

This year, we are very excited to announce our support to HART for Animals.  HART for Animals’ mission is to save the lives of adoptable animals through rescue and transport to areas where they will have a better chance of being adopted; reducing pet overpopulation through low-cost spaying and neutering; and building a humane and friendly animal adoption center where adoptable animals will never have to be euthanized.  Since the Spay/Neuter clinic opened in 2009, HART has spayed and neutered 3,200 animals, and in 2012, 512 animals were rescued through transports.  HART recently opened “Pick of the Litter” Thrift Shop and added Wellness Packages at the Spay/Neuter Clinic.  HART for Animals Center will open this summer on Bumble Bee Road.
