Towns of Garrett County- Deer Park, Maryland

Located about 5 miles south of Deep Creek Lake, Deer Park, Maryland is known for a historic resort hotel that once stood there. A small train town, Deer Park was a booming industry in the late 1800’s. The B & O Railroad dropped off many prestigious guests at the Deer Park Hotel for a fun, relaxing weekend in Mountain Maryland. In fact, President Grover Cleveland honeymooned here in 1886. The Deer Park Hotel is long gone, however, The Deer Park Inn Bed and Breakfast still offers an elegant French cuisine.

With a population just over 400 residents, Deer Park is once again ready for growth. With new sewer and water lines, the town is planning new construction projects and restoring historic buildings. For more information, please visit http://www.visitdeepcreek.com/pages/SouthernGarrettCounty.

FUN FACT: You know Deer Park Natural Spring Water? Yes, this is the same Deer Park! The popular bottled water comes from springs right here in Deer Park, Maryland.

Top 10 Things for Families to do in Maryland

7. Find Beauty and Fun at Deep Creek Lake

Four seasons of family fun can be found in the Deep Creek Lake area. Summer time boasts of boating and swimming at Deep Creek Lake, with its miles of shoreline and piers. The State Park offers campgrounds, beach access, a boat launch, and a kid-friendly Discovery Center. At the Wisp Resort Hotel, thrill-seeking kids will love zipping down the Mountain Coaster as they corkscrew and coast down the mountain. The Funland Family Fun Center is a perfect summer afternoon treat for families wanting to play mini golf, drive go-karts, and eat ice cream at the snack shop.

During the winter, the mountain is covered with fresh powder and the ski hill comes alive. Snow tubing, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, and dog sledding takes center stage at various locations in the area. The Bear Claw Adventure Park at the Wisp Resort gives kids a chance to ride a tube down the snow, ice skate, zip line on the Flying Squirrel Canopy Tour, and fly down the Mountain Coaster. In any season, Deep Creek Lake is a beautiful part of Maryland.

The Battle of Garrett County & Deep Creek Lake – Steelers v Ravens

It is being billed as ARMAGEDDON. The 3rd and final meeting of the year bewteen the area’s 2 favorite teams, the Pittsburgh Steelers & the Baltimore Ravens. Geographically, Deep Creek Lake is smack dab in the middle of the two cities. Vacationers from all over come from areas surrounding the NFL hubs. So, you can imagine, especially this week, there are large quantities of fans in the area.

The week leading up to the game is full of hype, and thanks to Facebook, you get to hear all the trash talking…all week long. This is the week where friends become foes, as the NFL game being played today at 4pm takes on a life of its own. There are bets on the line and there are offices divided. The Railey Realty office has its core of Steel Curtain fans and also fans of the Black Birds. You see the flags & car magnets flying around town; the jerseys on display at Arrowhead, the Wisp & Walmart; and the funny, yet tasteless, emails circulating through Deep Creek Lake mailboxes.

So, if you find yourself enjoying a late lunch or early dinner ANYWHERE around the lake and a TV comes on around 4pm, watch out. It’s Armageddon today, and you may want to get that last bit of food TO GO. It’s all in good fun, of course, but for Steeler & Raven fans, the season is on the line.

With that being said, there is one more picture I need to display in this post before making my own final preparations for the game, and I think you ALL know what this means:

GO STEELERS! BEAT THE BIRDS!!!!
