Located about 10 miles north of Deep Creek Lake, Friendsville, Maryland is known for its rich history and adventurous outdoor sports.  Home of the first settlement in Garrett County, the town now consists of 500 residents.

Friendsville residents have many sources of entertainment such as the Kendall Trail and the Friendsville Community Park. Just above the Yough Dam, the stretch of the Youghiogheny River in Friendsville is perfect for whitewater activities. When is the best time to visit Friendsville? FUN FACT: Although the citizens of Friendsville are quite friendly, the town is actually named for John Friend Sr., one of the first settlers that bought the tract of land from Native Americans in 1765.

Friendsville Days 2012 Set For July 27, 28 At Community Park

The 32nd annual Friendsville Days will be held on Friday and Saturday, July 27 and 28, at the Friendsville Community Park. This hometown festival will feature events for all ages. Admission is free. Guests are encouraged to bring a chair and stay all day. Bleachers and tents will be provided. This event will be held rain or shine.

New to this year’s event will be two free $500 drawings to take place at undisclosed times before 9 p.m. on Saturday. Those interested can sign up at the door prize booth and must be present at the time of the drawing, be at least 16 years old, and only have submitted one entry to win. Additional rules apply and will be posted at the booth.

The event kicks off on Friday with a free meal provided by Northern Rescue Squad Station 3 at 6 p.m. at the park. Other vendors will be open selling food, beverage, and novelty items that evening as well as all day Saturday. The Friendsville Community Watch will be providing two free inflatable rides for youth through teens from 7 to 9 p.m. Country music will be provided by the Crazy Cowboy Band from 7 to 10 p.m. on the outdoor stage.

Saturday will begin with a parade through the streets of Friendsville beginning at noon. Opening ceremonies and awarding of parade prizes will be held following the parade. The national anthem will be sung by Miss Maryland, Joanna Guy, and there will be a 21-gun salute, with raising of the American flag.

American Pie will hit the stage at 2 p.m. and will be performing top hits of the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s. A hoop dance by Aaron Smith will be presented at 4:30 p.m. and tae kwon do demonstration will be done at 5:30 p.m. Door prizes and raffles will also be held throughout the day. Ruff Creek will perform country music hits from 7 to 10 p.m. A dance floor will also provided. Fireworks will top off the evening at 10:15 p.m.

Plans are being finalized for the 31st annual Friendsville Days, which will be held Friday and Saturday, Aug. 5 and 6, in Friendsville.

“All are welcome to come join in some old-fashioned fun in the spacious Friendsville Community Park and partake of a variety of food, activities, and entertainment that will take place throughout Friday evening and all day Saturday, said Lucretia Sines, one of the organizers.

The activities will begin Friday with a picnic-style dinner at 6 p.m., sponsored by Northern Garrett Rescue Squad Station 3 in Friendsville. The meal is being offered to citizens in appreciation for the community support of the squad throughout the last year. Musical entertainment will be presented by the Crazy Cowboy Band at 7 p.m. Door prizes, games, and food will be available throughout the evening

Saturday’s schedule of events will begin with a noontime parade, with the theme this year being “Salute to American Heroes.” The newly crowned Miss Maryland will also participate in the parade. Persons/organizations interested in participating in the parade are asked to contact Roger Sisler at 301-746-5750.

Opening ceremonies, sponsored by Friendsville Pharmacy, will follow the parade at the community park and will include a 21-gun salute by county veterans.

Musical entertainment throughout the day will be provided by Lonesome Highway, West Virginia’s renowned bluegrass band.

Plans Finalized For This Weekend's Annual Friendsville Days Celebration

Friendsville Days 2010 will be held this weekend, beginning on Friday, Aug. 6, and ending on Saturday, Aug. 7. Admission is free to the two-day event, which will be held rain or shine.
Friendsville Days will begin with a free picnic dinner sponsored by the Northern Garrett Rescue Squad Station 3 on Friday, Aug. 6, at 6 p.m. Donations are not expected, but any received will benefit the Friendsville Library in honor of the Friendsville Area Quilters.

The annual Cancer Walk, a Friendsville Community Watch sponsored event, will also be held on Friday. Ribbons can be purchased in memory or honor of a loved one stricken with cancer. The Friendsville Days 2010 Queen will be announced at 6:45 p.m., with Miss Maryland Lindsay Staniszewski, along with Miss Friendsville Days 2008 Hannah Sines.

A Christian puppet show will present a program for kids of all ages at the pavilion at the play area. Musical entertainment will be provided by Girlz in Black Hats beginning at 7 p.m., sponsored by Northern Garrett Rescue Squad.

Saturday’s activities will begin with a volleyball tournament at 9 a.m. in the sand volleyball court. The 30th annual Friendsville Days parade will begin at noon. The grand marshal for the parade will be the Friendsville Area Quilters, who yearly have been providing handmade quilts to be raffled to benefit the Friendsville Library. The quilters will be selling chances for the latest quilt at the door prize booth.

After the parade, activities will continue at the community park. Opening ceremonies with a flag raising, 21-gun salute by local veterans, and the national anthem sung by Miss Maryland will begin at 1:30 p.m. Miss Maryland is sponsored by Friendsville Pharmacy.

Black Diamond will be performing gospel and country music beginning at 2 p.m. Bingo will also begin at 2 p.m. at the senior citizen building. Kids’ games will be held in the pavilion at the softball field, as well as a dunking booth. Rides will be provided by Fun Factory.

The annual Friendsville Days will be held on Friday, Aug. 6, through Saturday Aug. 7, at the Community Park in Friendsville. Numerous activities are being planned in celebration of the 30th year.
The car, truck, and motorcycle show will be held on Aug. 7 from 1:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Anyone interested in more information about the show should contact Pat Reip-Dice at 301-746-4280.

The Ms. Friendsville Days contest will be held for girls entering 11th or 12th grade this fall. Prizes will be awarded. Interested persons should contact Pat Bowser at 301-616-5576 for more information.

Parade invitations have been sent to last year’s participants, but anyone who did not receive an invitation may contact Sheryl Mac-Lane at 301-616-6644 to participate. Vendor spaces are still available by contacting Lucretia Sines at 301-746-5933.

A three-on-three basketball tournament for all ages is being held on Aug. 7. Persons should contact Phil Smith at 301-746-5172 for more information. A volleyball tournament is also scheduled for Aug. 7. Interested participants should call Dianne DeWitt at 301-746-5087.
