Who I Am My name is Jay Ferguson, and I am a lifelong resident of the Deep Creek Lake area. I am also co-owner of the real estate side of Taylor Made. I have been in the real estate business for 21+ years now and I LOVE what I do! I have to say, my career really took off when I co-founded the real estate side of Taylor Made in 2014. Its been an amazing experience, building a real estate company from the ground up and achieving so much so quickly! In August 2016, we purchased Long & Foster Real Estate Deep Creek, where I had started my career in 2000. In 2018, we on-boarded virtually every agent from Coldwell Banker Deep Creek Realty as they closed up shop and the real estate family grew even more! We now have over 40 sales agents and have expanded to West Virginia and Pennsylvania, as well. Taylor Made is the #1 vacation rental company at Deep Creek with over 475 vacation rental homes, and over one hundred thousand yearly visitors. Its amazing what we have accomplished using the principles of honesty, teamwork and customer service! Personally, my wife Jessica and I enjoy traveling and especially spending time in the outdoors, hiking and exploring the many diverse areas that Garrett County is naturally blessed with. We have raised two wonderful children here, Kayleah (22) and Noah (13). In the summer, we love spending time on the water with friends & family and enjoying the lake life! We are both active in our church, our community & local school activities, and we fill our schedule with plenty of volunteer efforts. I currently serve on the board of directors for Habitat for Humanity. I am proud to say that I was named Deep Creek Time’s Favorite ‘Community Champion’ in 2019. I was also named Garrett County Realtor of the Year in 2018-19, as well. I really enjoy promoting my hometown. I am very proud of the resort area that has developed over my lifetime and look forward to growing the area even more! Deep Creek Lake has been described as ‘The Lake Tahoe of the east', and I think that speaks volumes about the potential to own property here! Deep Creek Lake isn't really a town or city by itself; it's comprised of three towns: Oakland, Swanton & McHenry, Maryland. I am very passionate about my hometown and am impressed with how many people know about it as we travel around the country. Deep Creek Lake is an amazing place to visit and even better place to live! During the pandemic in 2020, our market exploded and more and more people left their primary residence in the city to live here permanently. With distance learning in schools and tele-commuting becoming the ‘norm’, many more people were drawn to the area to ‘live where they love to play’. Deep Creek Lake State Park

Spanning over 1,800 acres near McHenry, Maryland is Deep Creek Lake State Park. Located on the east side of the lake, Deep Creek Lake State Park offers one mile of shoreline for swimmers and water enthusiasts. Deep Creek Lake State Park offers fun for all four seasons. In the summer, this is a perfect place to swim at the lake. In the spring and fall, there is no better place to talk a walk in the woods. In the winter, these walking paths are perfect for some snowmobile fun. The possibilities are endless!

39th Annual Grantsville Days

The 39th Annual Grantsville Days will take place from June 24-26. Throughout the weekend, there will be events and vendors all over town. The parade will be Friday, fireworks Friday and Saturday, tractor pulls Saturday, and truck pulls Sunday.

The Grantsville chapter of the Lions Club will be sponsoring the event. Their infamous kettle corn and BBQ chicken will be on sale all weekend!

One of Deep Creek Lake’s Favorite Tourists: Albert Einstein

In September of 1946, Deep Creek Lake received a very special visitor:

Albert Einstein.

At this point in time, Einstein had created the basis for the atomic bomb (that he did not want to be used to hurt anyone) and the bombs had landed in Japan. He was quoted as saying, “The war was won but peace was not.” In such a hard time in his life, where did Einstein choose to find that peace?

That’s right, Deep Creek Lake.

Einstein stayed with a local doctor who was treating him- Dr. Tom Wilson. Throughout his two week vacation, the famous scientist was seen walking his dog, fishing, bird watching, and sailing. With such a heavy heart and mind, Einstein was able to acquire some comfort here at Deep Creek.

A man, Blair Thompson, was hired to assist Einstein during his vacation. Einstein gave the man an envelope with $50 inside and his signature in the corner. Thompson planned on keeping the envelope as a heirloom but unfortunately he lost it and it was never found.

Towns of Garrett County- Kitzmiller, Maryland

The town of Kitzmiller is located on the North Branch of the Potomac River. Back in the day, it was one of the largest producers and shippers of coal in the Garrett County/Allegany County region. Today, it has over 300 residents. It is known for its recreation activities such as fishing on the Potomac and nearby Jennings-Randolph Lake, strolling through its botanical garden, and biking on the river walk. Towns of Garrett County- Oakland, Maryland

Oakland, Maryland is the county seat of Garrett County. With over 2,000 residents, the town is small and charming yet offers all the amenities of a resort town. Many residents will notice that their lakefront Deep Creek Lake house address says Oakland. However, the heart of the town is 10 miles south of the Garrett County Highway 219 bridge. Designated as a “Main Street Community”, Oakland is filled with things to do. The town offers many parks, playgrounds, a 18-hole golf course, Broadford Lake (a 140 acre lake with a beach front), an outdoor farmers market, and more! When is the best time to visit Oakland? All the time! From the Autumn Glory Festival to the Little Yough Summer Music Fest to Winterfest, there is always something going on. Towns of Garrett County- Mountain Lake Park, Maryland

Located 8 miles south of Deep Creek Lake lies Mountain Lake Park, Maryland. Similar to other neighboring towns, Mountain Lake Park was a popular resort area from the late 1800’s to the 1940’s. A “Chautauqua” style town, Mountain Lake Park stressed the importance of education as well as recreation. Over the years, thousands of visitors have traveled through Mountain Lake Park, such as President William Howard Taft and Mark Twain.

Today, the town is filled with Victorian style homes representing the times gone by and over 2,000 residents. It is still a source of recreation, since it neighbors Broadford Lake. When is the best time to visit Mountain Lake Park? The Western Maryland Clay Court Tennis Championships in August! The town has been hosting this event for the past 94 years. Towns of Garrett County- Loch Lynn Heights, Maryland

Located about 8 miles south of Deep Creek Lake is Loch Lynn Heights, Maryland. Once known for its resort industry, the town is now a family-oriented community that 550 residents call home.

From the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, The Loch Lynn Hotel brought in many travelers from the tri-state area. The luxurious hotel once boasted a huge ballroom, an indoor pool, bowling alleys, and a casino. However, the hotel burned down in 1918 and its casino closed its doors in the late 1980’s.

Towns of Garrett County- Grantsville, Maryland

Located in Northern Garrett County, is a small town by the name of Grantsville, Maryland. Grantsville is known for its rich history on the infamous National Road. The Casselman Bridge is one of the largest attractions in the small town. Built in 1813, it was the largest single span stone arch bridge at the time. Today, it is open for the public to wander around the grounds. Spruce Forest Artisan Village is located directly next to the old bridge. The village consists of old log homes, school buildings, and a church. The buildings are open to the public and filled with local artisan vendors.
