Lynn Grimm Named 2012 Friend Of The Arts

Jul. 19, 2012

The Garrett County Arts Council announced that Lynn Grimm is the recipient of its annual Friend of the Arts award. Odette Lueck, president of the arts council, made the award presentation during the annual membership meeting and reception held at the Gallery Shop late last month. Lueck recognized Grimm for many years of dedicated work on behalf of community arts and presented her with a plaque and floral bouquet. The award honors individuals who demonstrate exemplary support for the arts in Garrett County.

Recipients of this award influence the lifestyles and the quality of life in Garrett County through noteworthy contributions to local cultural development. Lueck noted that Grimm “steps up to the plate and inspires others to do likewise. She is incredibly organized, dedicated, and disciplined in everything she does.” Grimm has been a full time resident of Garrett County since 2004, at which time she became involved in the arts community. She has volunteered her time as a board member for Garrett Lakes Arts Festival, serves as the accompanist for the Garrett Choral Society, and has volunteered in various roles at Our Town Theatre. She currently serves as president of Mountain Laurel Garden Club. Grimm has had a long career of teaching piano. She is the director of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church’s handbell choir, and sings with the church’s choir as well. She takes the handbell choir on the road to perform at nursing homes throughout the county. She also plays hammered dulcimer and organized a group called Front Porch Pickers that met at her Oakland home (which she shares with her husband Stan) on a regular basis to share their love of traditional music. The Garrett County Arts Council has recognized a Friend of the Arts honoree each year since 1995. Pictured from left are Karen Reckner, executive director of the arts council, Grimm, and Lueck.

Jun. 10, 2010

Garrett Lakes Arts Festival (GLAF) will present the classical crossover musical trio, Time for Three, on Saturday, June 19, at the Lodge at Wisp Resort in McHenry. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m.
“Violinists Zachary De Pue and Nicholas Kendall combine their love of fiddling in country western and bluegrass styles with bassist Ranaan Meyer’s deep roots in jazz and improvisation,” a GLAF spokesperson said. “As a special treat, there will be a meet-and-greet reception immediately following the concert. A cash bar will be available. Guests are invited to stay to meet these talented musicians and enjoy complimentary desserts and coffee provided by Wisp Resort.”

According to the spokesperson, Time for Three has earned distinction as a groundbreaking, “category-shattering” trio going beyond traditional classification, combining elements of classical, country western, gypsy, and jazz.

“What started as a trio of musicians who played together for fun while students at Philadelphia’s Curtis Institute for Music evolved into Time for Three, or tf3 for short – a charismatic ensemble with a reputation for limitless enthusiasm and no musical boundaries,” the spokesperson said.

The Garrett Mentors will attend a free daytime rehearsal on Saturday.

Tickets for the Saturday evening concert are $30 for adults, $5 for students, and free for children 5 years and younger (tickets are required).

Tickets may be purchased by calling the GLAF office at 301-387-3082, or through the GLAF web site, located at http://www.artsandentertainment.org/

GCAC Members Attend Md. Arts Day In Annapolis

Support the Republican Newspaper! Buy an online membership!

Feb. 18, 2010

Members of the Board of Directors of the Garrett County Arts Council along with staff, volunteers, and representatives of several other county arts organizations traveled to Annapolis on Feb. 9 for the 12th annual Maryland Arts Day, hosted by Maryland Citizens for the Arts (MCA) and the MCA Foundation.
This year’s theme was “Many Voices, One Song,” with the image of hundreds of voices together creating one song of support for the arts across the state, said Karen Reckner, executive director of the Garrett County Arts Council.

While the day was curtailed somewhat because of the inclement weather, Reckner said, a considerable crowd was still in attendance to demonstrate the importance of art in communities.

“Garrett County was the only county west of Frederick to make the trip,” she said. “We were recognized for the courageous spirit of the group.”

In addition to the county arts council, members of Garrett Lakes Arts Festival (GLAF) and Our Town Theatre also attended.

“Maryland Arts Day is the most important arts advocacy event of the year, bringing the many, varied voices of the artistic community together in support of state funding for the arts and the Maryland State Arts Council,” Reckner said. ” In addition, Maryland Arts Day acts as the only state-wide annual meeting for the Maryland arts community.”
