Lynn Grimm Named 2012 Friend Of The Arts

Jul. 19, 2012

The Garrett County Arts Council announced that Lynn Grimm is the recipient of its annual Friend of the Arts award. Odette Lueck, president of the arts council, made the award presentation during the annual membership meeting and reception held at the Gallery Shop late last month. Lueck recognized Grimm for many years of dedicated work on behalf of community arts and presented her with a plaque and floral bouquet. The award honors individuals who demonstrate exemplary support for the arts in Garrett County.

Recipients of this award influence the lifestyles and the quality of life in Garrett County through noteworthy contributions to local cultural development. Lueck noted that Grimm “steps up to the plate and inspires others to do likewise. She is incredibly organized, dedicated, and disciplined in everything she does.” Grimm has been a full time resident of Garrett County since 2004, at which time she became involved in the arts community. She has volunteered her time as a board member for Garrett Lakes Arts Festival, serves as the accompanist for the Garrett Choral Society, and has volunteered in various roles at Our Town Theatre. She currently serves as president of Mountain Laurel Garden Club. Grimm has had a long career of teaching piano. She is the director of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church’s handbell choir, and sings with the church’s choir as well. She takes the handbell choir on the road to perform at nursing homes throughout the county. She also plays hammered dulcimer and organized a group called Front Porch Pickers that met at her Oakland home (which she shares with her husband Stan) on a regular basis to share their love of traditional music. The Garrett County Arts Council has recognized a Friend of the Arts honoree each year since 1995. Pictured from left are Karen Reckner, executive director of the arts council, Grimm, and Lueck.

GLAF Offering Young Artists Workshop In July

Jun. 21, 2012

The Garrett Lakes Arts Festival (GLAF) will again offer its Young Artists Workshop open to youth entering 7th grade through graduating high school seniors. The camp is again under the instruction of Laura Stutzman, illustrator and graphic designer.

This is Stutzman’s 14th year to teach the visual arts workshop, designed for students with a desire to learn more about drawing and painting.

“The level of study is both ambitious and challenging with opportunities to try advanced mediums, work collaboratively, and raise their level of skill,” said Mary Callis, executive director of GLAF. “Exercises in scaling art, life drawing, and color theory round out a week of discovery and camaraderie, with a bonus of well-earned confidence for students to take away.”

The week will culminate in an evening show on Friday, open to the public.

Stutzman is a graduate of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, with a degree in visual communications. Her career began with the Pittsburgh Press in its promotion department, followed by a move to Washington, D.C., where she worked in advertising as an illustrator and designer.

In 1982, Laura co-founded Eloqui, a local illustration company she shares with her husband Mark. She has been a freelance illustrator since the founding of the company, which is headquartered in Mtn. Lake Park

“She is best known for her confident, painterly style that shows uniquely in today’s market,” Callis said. “With a blend of traditional approach and contemporary imagery, Laura’s paintings have adorned numerous magazines, posters, books, and annual reports.”

Stutzman regularly takes on private portrait commissions as well, when time permits.

“The roots of my approach to painting is seeded in the Golden Age of illustration and impressionist from the turn of the century,” Stutzman said. “Impressionists Sargent and Hassam, along with the narrative sensibilities of illustrators Dean Cornwell and N.C. Wyeth, inspire my desire to paint.”

The registration fee for the workshop is $125, which includes instruction, the cost of materials, and lunch, which is provided by the Garrett County Board of Education at the Laker Café.

For more information about the GLAF Young Artists’ Workshop, persons may visit the GLAF web site artsandentertainment.org or call the GLAF office at 301-387-3082.

Jun. 10, 2010

Garrett Lakes Arts Festival (GLAF) will present the classical crossover musical trio, Time for Three, on Saturday, June 19, at the Lodge at Wisp Resort in McHenry. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m.
“Violinists Zachary De Pue and Nicholas Kendall combine their love of fiddling in country western and bluegrass styles with bassist Ranaan Meyer’s deep roots in jazz and improvisation,” a GLAF spokesperson said. “As a special treat, there will be a meet-and-greet reception immediately following the concert. A cash bar will be available. Guests are invited to stay to meet these talented musicians and enjoy complimentary desserts and coffee provided by Wisp Resort.”

According to the spokesperson, Time for Three has earned distinction as a groundbreaking, “category-shattering” trio going beyond traditional classification, combining elements of classical, country western, gypsy, and jazz.

“What started as a trio of musicians who played together for fun while students at Philadelphia’s Curtis Institute for Music evolved into Time for Three, or tf3 for short – a charismatic ensemble with a reputation for limitless enthusiasm and no musical boundaries,” the spokesperson said.

The Garrett Mentors will attend a free daytime rehearsal on Saturday.

Tickets for the Saturday evening concert are $30 for adults, $5 for students, and free for children 5 years and younger (tickets are required).

Tickets may be purchased by calling the GLAF office at 301-387-3082, or through the GLAF web site, located at http://www.artsandentertainment.org/
