The Garrett Choral Society (GCS) will present its annual holiday concert, this year titled Christmas Joy, on Saturday, Dec. 11, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 12, at 2 p.m. The presentation will be given at St. Peter at the Lake Center in McHenry. The church is located along Mosser Road, just past Garrett College, on the right.
Under the direction of Julie Turrentine, the GCS features nearly 50 singers from all areas of Garrett County and nearby West Virginia. The group’s accompanist is Lynn Grimm, who will be joined on selected pieces by keyboard players Michael Broderick and Barb Peters. Moe Turrentine and Madonna Pool will provide percussion accompaniment.
The major work of this concert will be J.S. Bach’s Magnificat, which is the canticle of Mary from the first chapter of the Book of Luke, verses 46-55. The 12-movement piece will be the first half of the program, and will feature several soloists.
The second half of the program will consist of familiar Christmas songs, as well as some multi-layered choral pieces such as “Benedicamus Domino” by Peter Warlock and “Lux Aurumque” by Eric Whitacre.
The Con Brio Singers, an octet, will present Four Nutcracker Favorites, a light-hearted, abbreviated version of the classic work by Tchaikovsky. The men will present “Betelehemu” as well, which is a Nigerian Christmas song. It will feature soloist Royce Warnick.

FireFly Farms, producer of artisanal goat cheeses from Maryland’s Allegheny Plateau, received top honors for four of its aged goat cheeses at the American Dairy Goat Association’s annual conference. The ADGA held its annual conference Oct. 15 through 23 in Tucson, Ariz.
FireFly Farms’ aged goat cheese, Merry Goat Round, was honored as the 2010 Reserve Best-in-Show at the competition. Merry Goat Round also took a first place ribbon competing in its class against other unflavored surface mold ripened cheeses. These two new awards bring Merry Goat Round’s total individual award count to eight, including international recognition at the World Cheese Awards in 2004, 2007, and 2008.
FireFly’s aged goat cheese, Mountain Bleu, received the first place ribbon competing in its class against other unflavored blue-veined cheeses with exterior molding. This new award brings Mountain Top Bleu’s total individual award count to 13, including its 2005 selection by Saveur Magazine editors as one of their 50 favorite American cheeses and its international recognition at the World Cheese Awards in 2004, 2006, and 2008.
FireFly Farms’ aged goat cheese, Black & Blue, received the first place ribbon competing in its class against other unflavored, rindless, blue-veined cheeses. This new award brings Black & Blue’s total individual award count to five, including consecutive first place finishes in the ADGA Competition for 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010.
The ADJUSTED list vs sale price is 89.63% down 2% from last month (91.80%).
The current number of active/for sale residential listings (minus timeshares) is 751 as of today, down from last month (775). I expect this number to drop in the coming months, as most sellers remove their home from the market in the late fall/winter months, but even at this pace, it’s a 19 month supply of homes (last months pace was 24 month supply).

Dove Center staff and board members, supporters, and local officials broke ground last Friday for the construction of a new facility off Memorial Drive in Oakland. The center’s executive director, Heather Hanline, called the event a huge accomplishment. “I can’t think of a better way to kick off National Domestic Violence Awareness Month than to be breaking ground on our new facility, which is the product of years of time and effort, creativity, generosity, and community support,” Hanline said. The center was spearheaded 20 years ago by a small grassroots effort to address the needs of domestic violence and sexual assault victims.
Hanline noted the facility had a “humble beginning,” with just two staff members in a small office in downtown Oakland. Since then, the center has grown in an effort to meet an increasing need for its services. About two years ago, a capital campaign was launched to construct a new facility, which will include storage space, offices, and safe, secure shelter for victims. The campaign has raised nearly $300,000 in donations and garnered a $800,000 Community Development Block Grant from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development. Hanline said she hopes be able to move into the new center by this time next year.

University of Maryland senior Lindsay Staniszewski is Miss Maryland 2010, and through the annual sponsorship of Gregg’s Pharmacy, she will be a special guest in the Autumn Glory Festival Grand Feature Parade on Saturday, Oct. 9. At Maryland, Staniszewski is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in communications, with a specialization in public relations. Following her graduation in December 2010, she hopes to continue her education by obtaining a master’s degree in public relations. FireFly Farms, producer of artisanal goat cheeses from Maryland’s Allegheny Plateau, recently announced that three of its aged goat cheeses received top honors at the American Cheese Society’s (ACS) annual conference and judging held in Seattle, Wash.
The 2010 Judging & Competition saw a record number of entries: 1,462 cheeses and cultured milk products from 225 different producers in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. A total of 350 ribbons were awarded in 107 different distinct categories.
“The increase in this year’s entries mirrors the fantastic growth we’re seeing in the industry. As more people strive to make excellent cheese, they are turning to ACS for feedback about their products,” said ACS president Christine Hyatt. “The vision of our founders was not only to recognize the best cheeses in our industry, but also to offer feedback and guidance that will improve the quality of all cheeses produced in the Americas. This philosophy is still at the heart of our judging process today.”
FireFly Farms’ aged goat cheese, Black & Blue™, received the first place ribbon competing in a class against other blue-veined cheeses made from goat’s milk. This ribbon is the fourth individual honor received by FireFly Farm’s Black & Blue. These honors now include consecutive first place finishes in the ACS judging for 2008, 2009 and 2010.

WASHINGTON — Sales of new homes jumped last month, but it was the second-weakest month on record. The lackluster economy has made potential buyers skittish about shopping for homes.
New home sales rose nearly 24 percent in June from a month earlier to a seasonally adjusted annual sales pace of 330,000. May’s number was revised downward to a rate of 267,000, the slowest pace on records dating back to 1963. Sales for April and March were also revised downward.
The housing market had boomed earlier in the year on the strength of federal tax credits. Since they have expired, the number of people looking to buy has dropped even with the lowest mortgage rates in decades.
Despite the month’s increase, sales are still down 72 percent from their peak annual rate of 1.39 million in July 2005.
New homes sales made up about 7 percent of the housing market last year. That’s down from about 15 percent before the bust. Weak sales mean fewer jobs in the construction industry, which normally power economic recoveries.

With discussions of possible school closures on the horizon, the Garrett County Board of Education recently faced controversy over the 2010 Education Facilities Maintenance Plan that was presented by Jim Thomas at the recent board meeting. Thomas is the director of facilities and maintenance for all area schools, and the plan outlines ratings for each school to describe the quality of the facility.
At the start of the meeting, when the agenda was being discussed, it was suggested by board member Thomas Carr that it be added to the agenda a brief discussion about where things are headed with the upcoming school closure issue. Board member Jim Raley commented that it would not be fair to the public to add something “so critical” to the agenda after the original agenda was sent out.
Formal discussion has yet to take place on this issue, and plans are set for the August meeting to address the concerns. The amendment was withdrawn and the original agenda was approved unanimously by the board.
Thomas then took the floor to present the changes recently made to the maintenance master plan, with the ultimate goal being that the board approve the changes and the plan would then be submitted to the state. Thomas and eight other employees give input on the stability and conditions of the facilities currently in use by the county school system.
Raley voiced one of his conerns over the plan, noting that certain facility ratings have dropped drastically in the last year. When comparing the 2009 ratings and the 2010 ratings of Kitzmiller Elementary School, for example, a total of 15 areas dropped from fair or good condition to poor. Raley questioned whether this had something to do with the impending closing of this or other schools.
“I have trouble believing that this document will not become part of a case,” said Raley.
“What you’re saying about our staff is they’ve got some kind of hidden agenda or motive going on,” said member Rodney Durst.
