Jun. 17, 2010

Three popular local bands will kick off the 14th annual Little Yough Summer Music Festival Series tomorrow, Friday, June 18, at 7 p.m. at the Mountain Fresh Pavilion in Oakland. Scheduled to perform are the Lake Effect, Sugar Foot Stompers, and Double Shot.

The Lake Effect comprises twins Elliot (vocals/guitar) and Darryl Glotfelty (guitar/vocals), their older brother Rob (bass), and David Valenta (drums).

All of the members are Garrett County natives and have played extensively in western Maryland. The members also have a large following in the Baltimore area, where they have played at many of the premier venues the city has to offer.

The Sugar Foot Stompers band was formed in 2007 to play traditional New Orleans style jazz. It made its debut opening for the Preservation Hall Jazz Band in a Garrett Lakes Arts Festival performance.

Updates on McHenry, Ridgeview Valley, Airport & Wisp

“All construction work is complete, and the Ridgeview Valley and airport water storage tanks are online,” she said.

The director noted that a 32,000-gallon steel water storage tank from the Gorman system is now being used by McHenry. Gorman has a new concrete tank and no longer needs the steel one. The Gorman tank was dismantled, rehabilitated utilizing one half of its storage space, placed next to McHenry’s steel water storage tank, and put into service on June 1.

“With the addition of the second tank, a savings in electric costs will be realized due to a reduction in the pump cycles required to relay water to the 500,000 gallon tank on Wisp Mountain,” Lindsey said.

She added that having the second tank will enable the original tank to be taken offline for a short period in order to address operational problems and to allow for repainting.

Prowler Camp 2010 – Deep Creek Lake

By now, I am sure you have seen them prowling the streets of Garrett County & Deep Creek Lake…I’ll be honest, I had no idea that they were even coming, but my crack reporter, Larry Smith of Railey Realty, gave me the scoop on Tuesday: The East Coast Posse of Prowlers is at Deep Creek Lake. The official website is here, and the official invitation is here. They are here to pay tribute to the Native Americans who once inhabited Western Maryland, which is great reason to come up to visit. They are guests of Railey Mountain Lake Vacations, staying at the Silver Tree Suites & the Lodges at Sunset Village. If you see them, make sure to offer a friendly Garrett County welcome!

I got a few quick pics off as they Prowled by the new Dairy Queen and one while resting at Wisp Resort:

More in Garrett now eligible for tax credit

Cumberland Times-News

Some Garrett County homeowners who until now have been unable to qualify for a property tax credit will find they are eligible.

Currently county residents who qualify for the state Homeowners’ Property Tax Credit program, are 65 or older, and have lived in Garrett for at least 10 years, can also receive an additional credit of 25 percent of the state credit amount to apply to their county tax bill.

But the income threshold and tax bill guidelines to qualify for the state program left out a portion of Garrett’s low-income seniors who “probably suffer more than anyone else in trying to pay their taxes,” according to County Administrator Monty Pagenhardt.

Now residents who don’t meet the requirements for the state program can qualify for a county credit if they are 65 or older, have lived in Garrett for at least 10 years and have a combined gross household income of $25,000 or less.

That extends a county credit to people whose incomes are low, but whose tax bills aren’t high enough to meet the state program guidelines.

“This goes over and above the state’s guidelines,” Pagenhardt said.

He added that the lost revenue to the county will only be about $8,300 per year, but county officials wanted to extend the tax credit to those people finding it most difficult to pay property tax bills.

Those seniors who qualify for the expanded county program will receive a 50 percent credit on their county real estate and landfill taxes, but their state taxes will not be affected.

Wendy Yoder, director of financial services, said residents must still fill out the state application to be eligible for either the county and state credits or the new county credit program.

Applications are due by Sept. 1 for the tax bills that will come out in the summer, she said. The application forms are available online at www.dat.state.md.us, at the State Department of Assessments and Taxation office in the Garrett County Courthouse, or by calling that office at (301) 334-1950 and requesting a form by mail.

For more information contact the county staff at (301) 334-8970.

Jun. 10, 2010

This year’s “Play Hard. Live Clean.” Beach Blast is scheduled for Thursday, June 17, at Deep Creek Lake State Park. This free event is open to Garrett County residents completing sixth grade through age 20.
The Beach Blast will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. All activities are free and available only to participants who are registered with a completed registration form, including parent signature. Participants must display a Beach Blast flyer in the vehicle’s front window when entering the park or a $3 per person park admission fee will apply.

Registration packets may be picked up and dropped off at the Garrett County Health Department in Room 206. The registration packet, including the registration form and the various activity participation forms, is also available online at www.garretthealth.org and on the “Play Hard. Live Clean.” Facebook page.

“It is important to be thorough when filling out the registration packet, because students will not be allowed to participate in certain activities unless the appropriate form is signed by a parent,” said Beach Blast organizer Venessa Stacy, Garrett County Health Department.

The deadline for pre-registration and guaranteed entry is Tuesday, June, 15 at 5 p.m. Completed forms will also be accepted at the event until the registration limit is reached.

“Our goal is to continue to provide entertainment for local youth in an environment free of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs,” said Stacy.

WASHINGTON COUNTY — Nearly 200 Washington County properties were sold at a tax-debt auction Tuesday, although owners still can reclaim them.

The properties include the Red Byrd Restaurant in Keedysville and two downtown Hagerstown parcels connected to Demcore Development.

The home of former Hagerstown Mayor Steven T. Sager also was sold.

Bidders won’t take possession of the properties for some time, if at all.
