Three members of the Southern High School wrestling team returned to Garrett County this past weekend with individual state high school wrestling championships under their belts. The center podium was a familiar spot for both Jakob “Bubba” Scheffel, above left, and Lex Ozias, above right, as these were the third consecutive titles earned by each of them in their careers as Southern Rams. Gaining what could be the first of multiple state championships was Ram freshman Coy Ozias, brother of Lex, who is pictured below (click on the photos above to make photo visible) just after winning his title bout. Scheffel and Lex Ozias also now have the distinction of holding the #1 and #2 spots, respectively, for the total number of career wins by any public school wrestler in the history of Maryland.

History in the making – Republican News

Jan. 20, 2011

Now in his senior wrestling season at McDaniel College, Grantsville resident and Northern High School graduate Brock Glotfelty (above right) set a new McDaniel record for individual wrestling victories when he recorded a 12-3 major decision over Rick Danilkowicz (pictured left) of Johns Hopkins in the heavyweight division this week. This was Glotfelty’s 21st straight win of this season and the 113th of his collegiate career, which broke the previous McDaniel record of 112 held by Charlie Conaway. With a 113-20 career mark, Glotfelty set the program record in 19 fewer matches than did Conaway, who finished his 1996-2000 tenure with a record of 112-40. With more than a month remaining in the season, Glotfelty also enters the Centennial Conference’s top five in career wins. Gettysburg’s Jake Dell (1995-98) holds the conference record with 140 victories. Photo courtesy of Del Carpenter.

SCHEFFEL WINS NATIONAL TITLE

From the front page of the Republican:

Three members of the state champion Southern High School wrestling team competed in the National High School Coaches Association Junior National Championships at Virginia Beach, Va., this past weekend, and one of those Rams, Jakob “Bubba” Scheffel, returned home with the national title in the 160-pound division. He is pictured above right with teammate Lex Ozias, who finished third in the 140-pound division. Both are juniors at Southern, and both are current Maryland state champions.

Bubba cruised through his bracket of 48 of the nation’s top 160-pounders, pinning four opponents and recording a 12-1 major decision over the fifth one. Ozias won four straight matches, was edged by a single point in his fifth match, and won his sixth to take third place among 57 wrestlers in his bracket. Bubba’s brother, senior George “Brutus” Scheffel, finished the senior division tournament with five wins and two narrow defeats. His division included nearly 80 wrestlers, and he was one of four 4-time state champions in the 145-pound bracket. Northern High School’s Adam Moranduzzo also competed in the senior tourney and won two of three matches in the 152-pound division.

There was no prouder grandfather in the state of Maryland on Saturday than George Scheffel Sr. of Oakland, who is pictured congratulating his grandson George III – also known as Brutus – after the Southern High School senior won his fourth straight Maryland high school wrestling championship, a feat that had been accomplished by only three other wrestlers in the history of the state tournament. The icing on the cake for George Sr. was that Jakob “Bubba” Scheffel, younger brother of Brutus, claimed his second state title, as did teammates Lex Ozias and Davey Stewart. The four individual titles, plus a runner-up win by Ryan Bennett, gave the Rams their second consecutive team state championship.
