No Rest For The Weary

Relentless snowfall and high winds of the past several days in Garrett County have kept town and county roads crews out 24 and 7, working constantly to keep the paths open for safe travel. This driver is pictured as he crosses the frozen Little Yough in Oakland. The forecast does not indicate that these folks will get much of a break anytime soon, as snow is predicted every day for at least the next week. All drivers are of course urged to drive with great caution in this weather, and also to give space and patience to the snowplow drivers, who are, after all, out there making the place safer for everyone. Top 10 stories of 2010 – PittsburghLive.com

February snowstorm: What began with a mad rush for milk, bread and other essentials ended with stranded motorists, abandoned cars and thousands of homes and businesses without power when a storm dumped more than 2 feet of snow on the region Feb. 5 and 6

Wet snow and falling tree limbs cut electricity — and with it, heat, and in some cases, water — to about 188,000 homes. Gov. Ed Rendell and local officials declared states of emergencies. Authorities urged people not to drive but invited anyone without heat to huddle in “warming centers” inside churches, government buildings and senior citizen centers.

Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl was snowed in with family and friends in the Laurel Mountains, celebrating his 30th birthday. He tried to return to Pittsburgh, “but it just isn’t safe out there,” he said. Outraged residents criticized city officials for failing to clear many streets.

Snowfall totaled 21.1 inches at the National Weather Service in Moon. The amount varied across the region: 17 inches measured in Greensburg, 15.5 inches in Kittanning, 19 inches in Monessen, 22 inches in Mars and 11 inches in Punxsutawney,
the weather service said. Friendsville in Garrett County, Md., reported 35.5 inches.

Winter’s next round expected early Sunday

Preparations under way throughout region
From Staff Reports
The Cumberland Times-News Sat Dec 11, 2010, 08:01 AM EST

— CUMBERLAND — Winter’s early onslaught in Western Maryland is expected to continue this weekend with another winter storm predicted by early Sunday.

“It’s not going to be a paralyzing storm but the winds and the cold behind the initial system means business,” said Accuweather meteorologist Tom Kines at State College, Pa., Friday afternoon.

“Saturday looks to be a great day with sunshine and temperatures into the 40s for Cumberland, but then Saturday night into Sunday it will begin as snow or freezing rain until the front gets through later Sunday morning,” said Kines.

As for snow accumulation, Cumberland could get an inch, and several inches could fall in areas west of the city. “You are going to deal with a lot of snow showers Sunday night and for a prolonged period through Tuesday. I wouldn’t be surprised if areas of Western Maryland have up to a foot of snow on the ground by the time it’s finished,” he said.

The National Weather Service predicted a major storm system will affect the region Saturday night and into Sunday with mixed precipitation and possible snow accumulation. Widespread lake effect snow showers were also expected along with brisk northwest winds and cold temperatures that could push wind-chill readings to the minus 10 degrees range Monday night and Tuesday.

Daytime temperatures are not expected above 20 degrees.

For extreme Western Maryland, rain or freezing rain is expected after midnight Saturday and continuing throughout the day before turning to snow showers Sunday night, according to the National Weather Service. The forecast was posted Friday at noon.

Storm preparations were under way throughout the region, including Garrett County, where more than a foot-and-a-half of snow fell at Keysers Ridge over a four-day period ending Wednesday.

At the same time, up to 2 feet of snow was reported in the higher elevations of West Virginia.

“Tomorrow, SHA will begin to ‘pretreat’ interstates in western Allegany and Garrett counties if pavement conditions warrant,” said Maryland State Highway Administration spokesman Chuck Gischlar. “If the pavement is wet or the forecast changes to a mostly rainy start, then pretreating is not an option as it will run off of the highway.

“When SHA pretreats, we will use a combination of 85 percent salt brine/15 percent sugar beet molasses mixture. The material is sprayed onto the pavement and allowed to dry, which prevents snow and ice from initially bonding to the pavement and allowing SHA crews to remain ahead of the storm,” he said.

Wet or snow/ice covered roadways are not ideal and motorists should slow down and remain safely behind SHA crews. Posted speed limits apply to ideal weather conditions.

Winter officially begins Dec. 21.

Snow squall catches drivers and roads crews off guard

Friday morning’s snow squall caught state and county roads crews off guard, forcing them to abandon regular maintenance jobs and return to storage facilities to load salt trucks to treat the icy roads.

The unexpected storm sent cars and trucks skidding off roads and into each other and caused multi-vehicle pile-ups on Interstate 70 in eastern Washington County and western Frederick County, Maryland State Police said….

…Western Allegany County and Garrett County could see state roads pretreated this weekend with a new mixture of 85 percent salt brine and 15 percent sugar beet molasses if weather projections warrant and road conditions are suitable, Gischlar said. The beet molasses helps the pretreatment mix better adhere to the road surface, he said.

Western Md. snowfall exceeds 18 inches

MCHENRY, Md. (AP) – Weather watchers say a storm has dropped more than 18 inches of snow in far western Maryland.

The State Highway Administration said Tuesday afternoon that 18.5 inches have fallen at its Keyer’s Ridge maintenance shop since Sunday.

The SHA and state police say the storm has caused no serious accidents.

The Wisp ski resort in McHenry reports 19 inches of snow since Sunday.

Winter arrives in western Maryland, W. Va.

Accumulating snow possible mainly tonight into tomorrow
By Jason Samenow November 5, 2010; 10:30 AM ET

Areas shaded in purple are under a Winter Weather Advisory through Saturday due to the potential for 2-6″ of snow.No sooner than a day after the release of our winter outlook does the first accumulating snow event arrive in the mid-Atlantic region.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for Garrett County in western Maryland, which includes Deep Creek Lake. A second winter weather advisory covers the highlands of West Virginia, including extreme western Allegany, Highland, Pendleton, and western Grant and Mineral counties.

In western Maryland, at least 4 inches of snow is forecast by Saturday afternoon, with 6″+ in the high elevations. In the West Virginia highlands 2-5″ is expected.

Accumulating snow has not yet begun around Deep Creek Lake but you can watch the landscape whiten mainly tonight and tomorrow at DeepCreekCam.com.

Snow is not at all unusual in these areas during November. Oakland, Maryland — in Garrett County – averages about 9 inches of snow during the month. Four inches fell there last November.

The cause of the snow is an area of upper level low pressure moving through the region that will probably just produce scattered cloud cover east of the mountains. The D.C. Lake Blog offers a great discussion as to why this region gets so much snow.

NWS plans fewer winter weather alerts in Allegany

November 4, 2010 – Baltimore Sun weblog

Hardy Allegany County residents just seem to deal with wintry weather without paying much attention to the stuff, much less caring about how the weather forecasters choose to define it.
But the National Weather Service is acknowledging the frequency of bad winter weather in Western Maryland’s mountain stronghold by requiring slightly more dire forecasts before they’ll issue winter weather watches and warnings. The change puts the county into the same class as Garrett County just to the west.

Until now, the forecast for Allegany County – and for the rest of Maryland east of there – had to call for 2 inches of snow in 12 hours before the folks in Sterling would issue a Winter Weather Advisory. As of 10 a.m. Thursday, the criterion for Allegany (also Grant, Mineral and Pendleton counties in W. Va., and Highland County in Va.) will be 3 inches in 12 hours.

Winter Weather Prognosticator?

If caterpillars can forecast a mild or severe winter, then what’s this white hay bale one seen along Accident-Bittinger Road trying to tell us? That another record breaking snowfall is headed our way or that there won’t be much snow this winter? In any event, residents of Garrett County and the surrounding area are a hardy bunch of folks (as proven by their handling of last winter’s snowfall) and can tackle just about anything that Mother Nature wants to throw at them. Autumn officially began last week and winter isn’t too far behind. So, drag out those wooly sweater, cut some firewood, and have those snow shovels handy, just in case. Photo by Lisa Broadwater.

Garrett County smashes snowfall record

262.5 inches have fallen this winter at Keysers Ridge
From Staff Reports
Associated Press

times news — OAKLAND (AP) — The snowiest part of Maryland has set a winter weather record.

More than 2 1/2 feet of snow fell in Garrett County last week, pushing the seasonal total into record territory.

The State Highway Administration said Monday that 262.5 inches have fallen this winter at its garage near Keyser’s Ridge. That tops the old record of 233.5 inches recorded in the winter of 2002-03.

In Oakland, National Weather Service observer Sherry Helbig reports a seasonal total of 210 inches, more than double the winter average of 95 inches.

SHA spokesman David Buck said the snowbanks along state Route 495 are about as high as road crews can pile the stuff using giant snowblowers. He said it’s a challenge the agency has never faced before.
