He's Been Working For Almost A Week

Feb. 16, 2012

Bill Sandusky, owner of Frozen Assets, is visiting the area again and creating some impressive ice art despite almost too-warm temperatures. He has the benefit of a refrigerated truck (from Larry Wagner) to house his works of art, which he can carve out at an impressive pace. He arrived in Garrett County last Friday and has been working since. His sculptures will be displayed throughout Oakland this weekend during the fifth annual Winter Fest, a celebration of the season.

The weather may be a tiny bit warm for the event, but Sandusky said he is not worried, noting that the ice will hold up for some time, even if the temperature is a little above freezing. A great deal of events and activities are slated throughout the weekend, starting Friday night and continuing on through Sunday afternoon. Sandusky will create some pieces as folks look on. There will be food, contests, games, and other activities for all ages. For a complete schedule and further information, persons may go to the web site oaklandwinterfest.com. Photo by John McEwen.

Time For Some Ice Art

The fifth annual Winter Fest will take place in downtown Oakland Feb. 17-19. Bill Sandusky and his ice carving company, Frozen Assets, will arrive in town next week to begin the artistic work, that of creating a wide array of ice sculptures to be displayed throughout town, and lit at night for as long as they remain frozen. A great number of activities and events are slated for Saturday, Feb. 18, downtown, such as wine tasting, snowman building, s’mores making, and, if the weather allows, snowmobile races. More activities will take place Sunday, which will end with Sandusky’s carving of his own tribute to the festival. There is a “toddler photo” contest that will begin next week at Marvin’s (see separate story) as well, with the winners to be announced Saturday. Sandusky and his staff will carve ice for audiences to watch. There will be ice-bowling and sliding, and kids can sit on a giant throne of ice. For a complete schedule of events, persons may go to www.oaklandwinterfest.com. There will be “something for everyone” at this celebration of winter. Photo (at last year’s event) by John McEwen.

>Ice sculptor keeps his cool on warm day

Frozen figurines dot streets of Oakland
Michael A. Sawyers
Cumberland Times-News The Cumberland Times-News Sun Feb 20, 2011, 07:53 AM EST

— OAKLAND — Bill Sandusky was as frustrated as an ice sculptor on a warm day.

And it’s no wonder, because that’s just what he was on Saturday in downtown Oakland.

The temperatures in the high 40s made it impossible for Sandusky to show off details on his frozen figurines such as the brim on a woman’s hat, the hair on a boy reading a book, the mane of a horse, a fishing pole held by a lad.

“It’s just too warm, especially on the sunny side of the street,” Sandusky said. “The sculptures on the shady side will last longer,” he said, pointing to his works across Second Street.

This is the fourth year in Oakland at the Winter Fest for the peripatetic wielder of chainsaws, burrs and brushes. He is an Erie, Pa., native now living near Colorado Springs, Colo. The name of his endeavor is The Frozen Assets Ice Carving Co.

And get this, his day job is as a tractor-trailer driver for Reddy Ice out of Dallas. BYOI is not a problem.

After only a few touches of a chain saw to a large block of ice, onlooker Allison Carl, 7, of York, Pa., figured it out.

“It’s a boy reading a book,” she said, realizing that the sculpture was outside of The Book Mark’et and putting two and two together.

A week ago Sandusky was doing his gelid thing in Old Colorado City. A week from now he will be in Alaska, competing in an international ice sculpturing event.

“His work is amazing,” said Roger McClung of Washington, who has a second home in Deer Park and drives westward every weekend to Garrett County. “The sculpture of the train down by the depot has great detail.”

A group of about 30 onlookers was showered often by flying ice dust as Sandusky applied his chainsaw to frozen hunks. Still-cameras clicked and video cameras whirred.

Sandusky has been turning blocks of ice into treasure chests (in front of banks), smartly dressed women (in front of a fashion shops), and steeds (near the horse and carriage stop) for two decades.

“The ideal temperature is 25, but I’ve carved in temperatures as high as 86 in Pennsylvania and as low as 42-below in Alaska,” he said.

“When it gets that cold it can be dangerous,” he said. “You have to add alcohol to the water you work with so it won’t freeze to your skin.”

Friday was even warmer in Oakland than Saturday.

“We got a late start and that backed us up,” Sandusky said.

Although he had planned to begin carving early Friday, he waited until 10 p.m. for cooler temperatures and worked well into the night.

Sunday, Sandusky will carve a final ice statue, at the gazebo in Oakland.

The streets of Oakland soon will be decorated with a variety of ice sculptures, as the fourth annual Winter Fest will get under way tomorrow, Feb. 18, and run through Sunday evening. The sculptures will be lighted, and a drive through the town in the evening can be particularly engaging for sightseers. The weather could possibly hamper the festival a little bit, as after months of bitter cold, the area is to experience a warm spell. However, Saturday’s high is to be just 37, so the sculptures should remain intact. Many will be placed and lighted Friday night, and more will be carved “live” throughout the day on Saturday by returning artist Bill Sandusky of Frozen Assets. There will be “ice bowling,” a campfire with s’mores, other food, and music. Brochures with maps and activity listings will be available. Photo by Deb Swiger.

Feb. 10, 2011

The town of Oakland is gearing up for its fourth annual Winter Fest, slated for Feb. 19-20. The event celebrates winter and features ice carvings throughout the town, created by Bill Sandusky of Frozen Assets for the fourth consecutive year. A number of events and activities, from ice bowling to snowmobile races, are scheduled for the festival.
Sandusky will begin the carving on Thursday, with his operations set up at the Mtn. Fresh pavilion off Second Street. Persons are invited to watch him at work.

The festivities will be officially kicked off Friday night with a progressive dinner via horse-drawn sleigh ride. Starting at Oakland’s historic train station, the group will move on to four separate restaurants for all the dinner courses. Reservations are required for this event, and may be made by calling Jim Johnson at 301-616-4008.

Friday night also ushers in the lighting of the ice sculptures, which will be done each evening. Persons may wish to drive through the town after dark to see the lighted carvings.

Sandusky will continue the carving on Saturday morning, at various town businesses, while a number of activities will take place. Included in the day’s line-up is ice bowling with frozen cantaloupes near the gazebo (at the corner of Second and Liberty streets), a game sponsored by Electronic Diagnostic Center (EDC), and the annual Snowman Building Contest near the train station. Prizes will be awarded in two divisions: adult (over 16 years) and youth (under 16).

Starting at 11 a.m., children can stop by a special display near the gazebo and the Ice Bowling Alley to get a free block of ice with their names etched by one of Sandusky’s helpers. They will be offered while supplies last.

Horse-drawn sleigh rides will be available on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. by Pleasant Valley Dream Rides as well.

Winterfest 2010 in downtown Oakland, Maryland

As you can see, we had a dazzling sunny day for Winterfest in Oakland yesterday. The temperature was perfect, and there were a lot of Garrett County folk who shook off their latest episode of cabin fever and took to the streets. I am always particularly impressed with the Oakland train station and the downtown Garrett County Historical Society museum. There is such a rich history of the area contained in that museum, you should really stop by to check it out. You could easily spend a few hours reading all of the displays and looking at the photos. I’ll blog more about that later.

As for Winterfest, it was a perfect day to pull it off. Lots of activities for the kids, plenty of diverse ice sculptures to ogle and a plethora of local vendors and artisans peddling their wares on the streets and at the Oakland train station.

We really enjoyed it – the kids thought sitting in an ice throne (sponsored by Grand Central Station) was ‘awesome’ and the Dragon Slide (sponsored by Long & Foster Real Estate) was pretty cool, too. We were hoping to ride the horse drawn sleigh, but the line was just a little too long.

We enjoyed a tasty lunch at Wendy’s Town Restaurant, which was packed. Their buckwheat cakes and sausage are among the best in town – Englanders and OakMar have pretty darn good buckwheats, too 🙂 Winterfest seemed to be a great success in terms of business for local merchants and vendors – which was great to see.

I didn’t get to make it to the snowmobile races because of a sleeping little boy, but I heard they were awesome. I’ll find some info out there and share in the coming days. Winterfest is still going strong today (Sunday), so get out there and enjoy it! It’s a bright sunny day!

OAKLAND — Oakland Main Street is sponsoring its third annual Winter Fest on Feb. 19, 20 and 21, with a wide variety of activities planned for Garrett County residents and visitors alike.

Organizers said last year’s festival was a huge success and this year’s festival has been expanded to a three-day event. Once again, ice carving demonstrations will be held during the run of the celebration. The event relies on sponsorships from local businesses and contributions from the public.

Festival crowds will be treated to an encore performance by expert ice sculptor Bill Sandusky, whose company, Frozen Assets, has been a member of the National Ice Carvers Association since 1999. Sandusky, an award-winning ice carver who served Western Pennsylvania for 15 years, is now located in Colorado. This will be his third Oakland Winter Fest.

Five carvings will be created during the daylight hours with an additional 25 sculptures being displayed throughout town. Tons of sparkling ice art will grace downtown Oakland throughout the day and evening during the festival.

Highlights of the festival include:

• Progressive Dinner, starting at Oakland’s historic train station with diners arriving at each dinner course via horse-drawn sleigh.

• All-you-can-eat pancake breakfast at the local fire hall.

• Lighting ceremony, with most of the ice sculptures lighted after dark. During previous festivals, many people drove around downtown in the evening to see the sculptures.

• An “ice throne” to sit on, providing an opportunity for photographs.

• Dragon slide.

• Frozen bowling alley.

• Snowmobile drag races.

• Snowman building competition.

• Wine tasting.

• Music by the Preston Madrigals and Maria Rose and Danny Elswick.

• Campfire with s’mores.
