Deep Creek 2014: Spectators flock to Western Maryland for Olympic atmosphere

photo (4).JPG

Ryan jumps around on the concrete lining the Adventure Sports Center International course in an U.S. Soccer jersey and matching bandanna and American flag face paint. He watched all of this summer’s World Cup and plays soccer, but this is his first time watching slalom canoe or kayak.

When asked which he enjoys more, international soccer or international kayaking, the 7-year-old finally stops moving and takes a few seconds to answer. “Kayaking,” he decides, and goes back to playing on the grass and the tiered seating area.

His mom, Cathy Witt, is impressed that a day at the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships near Deep Creek Lake had such a quick impact on him. Witt saw a posting on Facebook about a world championship just 45 miles from their home in Cumberland, Md., and figured it was worth checking out.

“I figured it’s a once in a lifetime thing, being here and watching it,” she said. “It has an Olympic-feel, and the kids are really into the Olympics so for them to be here and in this type of atmosphere.”

Brian Homberg of Railey Realty Wins Kayaking National Champion Title

Way to go Brian!!

Brian Homberg became a National Whitewater Slalom Champion this past weekend at The Adventure Sports Center International atop Wisp Mountain. He is the winner of the over 40 age group. The National title was contested in the juniors category and senior/masters age groups on the ASCI whitewater course. Brian has been enjoying the sport of kayaking for over 30 years and is no stranger to whitewater competition – a former U.S. Team member who trained for the 1992 and 1996 Olympics, narrowly missing the team both times. Brian now coaches and teaches local kids how to kayak as part of the Junior Adventure Sports Team at ASCI. This provides them with an opportunity to experience, learn and potentially compete in whitewater sport. The program emphasis is on river awareness, safety, introduction to paddling skills and boat handling, while progressing at their own pace and comfort level. Brian is father to Adam, 11 and Heather 13 and a full time sales associate with Railey Realty.

Jun. 24, 2010

The Adventure Sports Center International (ASCI) will host the first of two national caliber competitions this weekend.
The U.S. Canoe and Kayak Whitewater Slalom “Age Group” National Championships combine the Junior and Masters/Legend national championships, and will be held on Sunday morning, June 27.

“It’s a serious race for the kids, and a weekend warrior contest of words and occasionally amazing deeds for the old folks,” said one veteran slalom racer.

The Age Group Nationals is open to the public and will occur from 7 to 11 a.m. on Sunday. Whitewater rafting trips will be available Sunday after the race for anyone who would like to ride the same rapids.

Members of the 2010 U.S. Junior National Team will earn National Champion titles, and a number of the athletes may go on to the Olympics.

Racing this weekend will be young athletes from as far as Washington state, Colorado, and throughout the East Coast. In particular, the Maryland-based “Bethesda Center for Excellence” (BCE) team, coached by 1989 World Champion silver medalist and two-time Olympic medalist Dana Chladek, will field a full team. BCE is also helping to organize and co-host the event with ASCI.
