Deep Creek Lake 100 Birthday Bash set for July 19

Garrett County Republican

McHENRY — The public is invited to the Deep Creek Lake 100 Birthday Bash on Saturday, July 19 at the Garrett County Fairgrounds. Special events are planned all day from noon to 10 p.m. in celebration of both the 100-year legacy of Deep Creek Lake and the surrounding community.

A special admission fee of only 25 cents is planned for the birthday-themed fair-style event, making it affordable for everyone. Displays will educate about Deep Creek Lake history and there will be interactive demonstrations, giveaways, live entertainment featuring both local and national bands, a dedicated kids’ zone, various food, nonprofits and charities, and a Biergarten serving beer and wine.

Ending the day, for the first time ever in the area, Firefly will present a sky show, with 200 drones in the night sky creating animations, shapes and symbols representing Garrett County and set to music. Demonstrations will also be given during the day showing how the software works.

Musical entertainment will include The Remedy, Queen City Funk & Soul and the headliner Buckwild, planned for 6:30 p.m. in the Ag Heritage Hall.

Buckwild is a country cover band from Pittsburgh, Pa., with members from the The Hillbilly Way, Chris Higbee Project, Journey Through The Ages, and Whiskey High.

Buckwild’s song list is made up of today’s best country hits and a few well-known rock and metal anthems. Current songs on the charts include “100 Summer Nights” and “Wait in the Truck” featuring Amanda James.

Outside the gates, the Mountain Top Cruisers will present a centennial car show that is open to anyone. Inside, plans are to showcase a car from each decade over the last 100 years.

The DCL 100 float will be on display and set up for photo opportunities. The Maryland Natural Resources Police will have displays and demonstrations of their Underwater Operations Team and their Unmanned Aircraft System.

There will be Taekwondo demonstrations and safety awareness information from Red Beard Scuba & Recovery. Halian Landscaping will have a sand zone with diggers for kids, and fishing demonstrations will teach how to cast a line. Robotics demonstrations are also planned.

The Biergarten will be offered in the area where chicken dinners are normally served, with beer and wine available through the Lions Club and Lohr Distributors. HART for Animals will offer free wine glasses from past events, and the Oakland Rotary will give out stadium beer glasses for its 100th anniversary until they run out.

Food will be sold in the nonprofit booths and there will be dunk tanks.

In the Ag Hertiage Hall, historic displays will be presented, including 100 years of Deep Creek Lake photos.

Local towns will also be represented, as well as the Deep Creek Property Owner’s Association and the Deep Creek Watershed.

A display will also include Flying Scot #1 with its mast up and a Sears & Roebuck kit boat that has been in Garrett County for its entire life.

The Quonset huts will house nonprofits, charities, demonstrations and craft vendors.

Volunteers are still needed for the event. To inquire, contact Kitty at kitgmiller@gmail.com.

Help Address Your Workforce Issues with the Updated Work Ethic Diploma Program!

After 5 successful years we feel it is time to make some changes to the Work Ethic Diploma (WED) Program to keep the it relevant and take it to the next level. The concept of the program was originally put forward to the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce by employers who felt students were not learning the soft skills necessary to become productive members of the workforce.

With the input of area educators, business leaders, and post-secondary representatives, we developed standards to evaluate the work ethic of our students. These standards are not being changed. Based on feedback from employers participating in the program and discussions with our stakeholders we have decided to replace the hourly pay incentive with a more tangible sign-on bonus to be rewarded after a qualifying length of employment. Another exciting change we are implementing is a Worth Ethic Diploma Reception that will recognize and celebrate students receiving the honor and our business partners participating in the program. This will be a great opportunity for you to network and recruit prospects. More details on this event will follow.

Whether you are a current WED partner or looking to join the program, we ask that you please review and sign the new form and return it to holly@garrettchamber.com or 15 Visitors Center Drive, McHenry, MD 21541. You can also click here for the criteria and business commitment form updated with changes highlighted for your convenience. We appreciate your participation and look forward to working with you to grow and enhance the Work Ethic Diploma Program to better meet Garrett County’s workforce challenges.

Celebrating the 2025 Work Ethic Diploma Recipients!

We’re proud to share the success of our inaugural Work Ethic Diploma Reception, a milestone event celebrating the dedication of local students who have demonstrated the soft skills and strong work ethic needed to thrive in today’s workforce. Created in partnership between Garrett County Public Schools and the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce, this program was designed with input from educators, business leaders, and post-secondary institutions to promote key workforce readiness traits—like discipline, teamwork, attendance, community service, and more. Students who earned the diploma met rigorous criteria and even had the option to voluntarily participate in a drug-free screening—an effort supported by the Garrett County Health Department, helping to promote healthy, job-ready lifestyles.

A heartfelt thank you for the support of:

  • Garrett County Department of Business Development for sponsoring the event
  • Garrett County Public Schools
  • Garrett County Fair Board for allowing us to host the event at the Ag Heritage Hall

And to the amazing businesses who attended the reception to celebrate these workforce-ready students:

  • Ruth Enlow Library
  • First United Bank & Trust
  • Beitzel Corporation & Pillar Innovations
  • Garrett College

Without these organizations and businesses this program and the reception would not be possible. Together, we are building a stronger, more prepared workforce for Garrett County!

The Bloodhounds Will Return to Garrett County

The National Police Bloodhound Association (NPBA) will be hosting their annual 40-hour training certification seminar in Garrett County, Maryland Sunday April 27, 2025 to Thursday May 1, 2025. This is one of the NPBA's annual seminars held each year and has held the spring seminar in Garrett County for many years. The seminar happens at a time of the year, between seasons in Garrett County, and for many of the businesses, it contributes to the economy.

Training areas will remain largely the same as in previous years, including Grantsville, Oakland, Friendsville, Accident, Mt. Lake Park/Broadford Area, state parks, the 4-H Complex near Bittinger, and the fairgrounds in McHenry. We expect approximately 40 handlers and hounds to participate this year, with up to 60 total people in attendance. Host lodging will again be provided by WISP Resort, and now that Garrett College has recongnized this course through the Continuing Education Department, Sunday classes will be held in a classroom at the College.

The bloodhounds are training, so please be respectful and don't interrupt them or be alarmed.

25th-annual Country Fest and Auction scheduled Aug. 24

From The Garrett County Republican

McHENRY — The 25th-annual Country Fest and Auction is set for Aug. 24 at the Garrett County Fairgrounds in McHenry from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission and parking are free.

Billed as “an event for the whole family,” the festival is traditionally held the fourth Saturday in August.

Planning, setting up, running and cleaning up takes a large team of volunteers.

“Each church member from the age of 10 and up is assigned something to do,” said Lucy Maust, festival secretary. “We all just pitch in and do it.”

The fundraiser is sponsored by the Bittinger and Pillar of Life Mennonite churches in the Bittinger/Accident area. Maust stressed that 90 percent of all proceeds go toward Christian education for the church members’ children. The remaining 10 percent is donated to Christian Aid Ministries — a nonprofit Mennonite group headquartered in Berlin, Ohio — to minister to the “physical and spiritual needs of the world.”
