The Maryland Board of Public Works yesterday approved more than $1.4 million in grants to improve water supply systems and protect drinking water, with half of the funds being awarded to the town of Oakland.
Grants of $785,433 from the Water Supply Financial Assistance Program were awarded to Oakland.

The money will help fund study, design, and construction to modify the town’s Broadford Lake and Bradley Run water treatment plants to lower the concentration of disinfection by-products and improve the quality of its drinking water.
The board is composed of Governor Martin O’Malley, Treasurer Nancy K. Kopp and Comptroller Peter Franchot.
“Everyone deserves to have an adequate supply of safe drinking water. Nothing is more important to our public health,” said Governor O’Malley. “These projects protect public health while creating jobs for more Marylanders.”

Feb. 10, 2011
The town of Oakland is gearing up for its fourth annual Winter Fest, slated for Feb. 19-20. The event celebrates winter and features ice carvings throughout the town, created by Bill Sandusky of Frozen Assets for the fourth consecutive year. A number of events and activities, from ice bowling to snowmobile races, are scheduled for the festival.
Sandusky will begin the carving on Thursday, with his operations set up at the Mtn. Fresh pavilion off Second Street. Persons are invited to watch him at work.
The festivities will be officially kicked off Friday night with a progressive dinner via horse-drawn sleigh ride. Starting at Oakland’s historic train station, the group will move on to four separate restaurants for all the dinner courses. Reservations are required for this event, and may be made by calling Jim Johnson at 301-616-4008.
Friday night also ushers in the lighting of the ice sculptures, which will be done each evening. Persons may wish to drive through the town after dark to see the lighted carvings.
Sandusky will continue the carving on Saturday morning, at various town businesses, while a number of activities will take place. Included in the day’s line-up is ice bowling with frozen cantaloupes near the gazebo (at the corner of Second and Liberty streets), a game sponsored by Electronic Diagnostic Center (EDC), and the annual Snowman Building Contest near the train station. Prizes will be awarded in two divisions: adult (over 16 years) and youth (under 16).
Starting at 11 a.m., children can stop by a special display near the gazebo and the Ice Bowling Alley to get a free block of ice with their names etched by one of Sandusky’s helpers. They will be offered while supplies last.
Horse-drawn sleigh rides will be available on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. by Pleasant Valley Dream Rides as well.

Town Of Oakland Receives Major Grant To Benefit The Dove Center

Aug. 19, 2010
Oakland mayor Peggy Jamison announced to staff and board members of the Dove Center on Friday, Aug. 13, that the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development awarded the town of Oakland a Community Development Block Grant.
The grant of $800,000 will help the Dove Center build a new facility, which is projected to be completed in less than 18 months. The facility will provide storage space, private offices for administrators and counselors, and safe, secure shelter for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
Criteria for the grant included demonstrated need and community support for a new facility. “Dem-onstrating need for the facility was relatively easy. The current shelter, with one bathroom, sometimes houses as many as 15 people,” stated a spokesperson for the Dove Center.
In addition to the grant, community support also helped to finance the plan for the new building. Two years ago the center, under the leadership of Edna Forsyth, organized Capital Campaign II, setting a goal of $200,000, which was a quarter of the amount applied for in the grant. Employees and volunteers set out to ask friends, family, neighbors, and businesses for donations. To date, according to the campaign’s chair, Pam Trickett, the total campaign effort has raised about $289,000, with donations still coming in.

Not long ago, Greg Mortimer, the builder of the Dairy Queen Grill & Chill, informed me that they are expecting to open in mid-May. You can tell from the photo that there has been significant progress since that last photo I posted.
