3rd annual Garrett County Gran Fondo

http://www.GarrettCountyNews.com

The 3rd annual Garrett County Gran Fondo in scenic and mountainous western Maryland will be held on June 23, 2012. Garrett County and the Deep Creek Lake area boast some of the finest and most challenging cycling in North America, and in just two years of sold-out rides the Garrett County Gran Fondo has established itself as a premier North American coast Gran Fondo.

Registration for the 2012 event is open. The Garrett County Gran Fondo is limited to 1200 participants total across all five of the rides. As of May 31, only 100 registrations remain, so do not delay in registering as a 3rd consecutive sell-out is imminent.

Friday Evening Bluegrass, Info Session, and Saul Raisin Keynote Dinner
The Garrett County Gran Fondo is trying something new in 2012. Instead of a post-ride bbq dinner there will be a Friday evening dinner at the Wisp Resort instead. Food will still be provided at the finish line for hungry and exhausted cyclists.

Featuring the award winning bluegrass band, The Hillbilly Gypsies, this buffet style dinner is free to all riders and a small charge to guests.

Starting at 8pm there will be an information and Q&A session followed by a speech by former pro cyclist, 2012 Garrett County Gran Fondo participant, and traumatic brain injury survivor, Saul Raisin. This is an event you do not want to miss.

It takes a lot of bodies to put on an event the scale of the Garrett County Gran Fondo, and your help is needed. The fight to defeat skin cancer was given a significant boost on Saturday, as more than 600 athletes hopped on their bicycles and rode all over Garrett County for up to 125 miles in the Win-The-Fight Gran Fondo. This was a four-ride-option biking fundraiser hosted by the Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation. In last year’s inaugural event, 200 riders brought in a total of $14,000 for the foundation. This year, according to Greg Safko, foundation president, 602 riders took part and raised $39,000. In addition to the support of the melanoma organization, the Gran Fondo brings hundreds of athletes and their families into Garrett County, who, according to the multiple positive after-event surveys, were in awe of the scenery and beauty of the county, as well as bowled over by the friendliness and helpfulness of the many volunteers along the way. Local rider Tom Johnson said he had many conversations with other riders throughout the day. “The comments they made about Garrett County were all great,” Johnson said. “It made me proud to tell them that I have lived here and ridden here for many years, and am happy to be able to share our wonderful county. I’m sure we will see many of these cyclists here again.” Photo courtesy of Railey Mountain Lake Vacations.

Garrett County residents are advised to watch for cyclists on numerous county roadways this Saturday, June 25, for the Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation’s second annual Win the Fight Garrett County Gran Fondo.

Bicyclists will ride on a variety of roads, specifically the Rt. 219 area north of Accident to Keyser’s Ridge. Bikers will be traveling south from Devil’s Half Acre Road and make their way 1.9 miles south to a left turn on to Rabbit Hollow Road. Maryland State Police will maintain a presence to slow traffic as cyclists make this turn. This will not disrupt the flow of traffic.

The charity ride supports melanoma skin cancer research, education, and advocacy. All county roads will remain open to traffic; however, motorists are asked to be aware of riders. Bike routes are available on the charity ride web site www.winthefight.org/granfondo

A unique biking event gaining international attention as one of the most challenging courses in the world will take place in Garrett County on June 25. The “Win the Fight” Garrett County Gran Fondo, organized by the Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation, producers of the acclaimed SavageMan Triathlon Festival, will get under way that day, and is bringing more than 500 participating bikers to the area.

This ride is not a race, organizers stress, but is a challenge offered to bikers well as an opportunity given to them to raise money to support the fight against skin cancer. The event offers four different routes for bikers of all levels, with the courses designed by SavageMan course architect Kyle Yost.

“The ‘Gran Fondo’ is a celebrated tradition in Italian cycling culture,” said Greg Safko, president of the Nicolay foundation. “A Gran Fondo is a long distance, mass-participation cycling event – not a race – that welcomes professional, amateur, and recreational cyclists of all abilities. The Garrett County Gran Fondo offers four supported ride options with staggered 7 a.m.+ starts and ending at the Adventure Sports Center International.”

The four rides are as follows, described by Yost and Safko:

“Diabolical Double.” At 125 miles and 16,500 feet of climbing, this ride is an extreme challenge on par with any single day ride in the world and already an epic North American ride.

“Savage Century.” A worthy epic ride in its own right at 102 miles and 12,700 feet of climbing, sharing the initial 59 and final 15 miles with the Diabolical Double.

“Masochistic Metric.” A beautiful 62-mile ride that highlights the beauty of rural Garrett County. It’s not nearly as extreme as the Double or Century, but does include 8,000 feet of climbing, and is “no walk in the park.”

“Garrett’s Greatest 25.” A beautiful 25-mile and 2,800-feet ride, through the rolling Garrett County farmland, with a sprinkling of modest climbs.

Cyclists may still register for the ride. The event’s web site, located at www.winthefight.org/granfondo, provides the information necessary to learn more regarding the actual courses, as well as for spectators to determine best viewing options. Cyclists are asked to raise funds for the Joanna M. Nicolay Melanoma Foundation with the event, and those who bring in $300 or more will be awarded an exclusive Gran Fondo bike jersey; while participants raising $1,000 or more will be given the jersey as well as a Garmin Edge 500 GPS bike computer with the Gran Fondo routes pre-loaded and one ticket for the “Champion” fundraiser grand prize raffle. An additional raffle ticket is earned for every $100 raised above $1,000. The grand prize of the raffle is the use of a luxury Deep Creek Lake rental home for a future weekend, courtesy of Railey Mountain Lake Vacations.

This event was noted in the July issue of Triathlete magazine, inviting avid bikers to take part in a course that is far more than “your typical Saturday morning work-out.”
