48th Annual Autumn Glory Festival Set For October 7 - 11, 2015
McHenry, MD — Enjoy the beauty of the fall season in the mountains as Maryland celebrates the 48th anniversary of Autumn Glory with two large parades, concerts, band competitions, art exhibits, antique and craft shows and much more from October 7 – 11, 2015 in Garrett County, Maryland. The 48th Annual Autumn Glory Festival is sponsored by Garrett Regional Medical Center, a proud affiliate of WVU Medicine.
Known for scenic Deep Creek Lake and Maryland’s only ski resort, Wisp Resort, Garrett County is also home to the annual Autumn Glory Festival, a five-day celebration of autumn that celebrates the beauty of the local fall foliage. From Wednesday through Sunday, the area offers a wide variety of things to do indoors or outdoors.
Take in the breathtaking views of our spectacular Fall Foliage by driving or biking one, or both, of the county’s 2015 Autumn Glory Fall Foliage Tours. The first tour is a scenic route which includes Several Barn Quilts, Friend’s Store, Cranesville Swamp, Swallow Falls State Park, Fork Run Recreation Area and Maryland Scenic Byways. The Extended Fall Foliage Heritage Tour includes Bear Creek Traders, Historic Oakland, Maryland High Point, Historic African Methodist Episcopal Church, Loch Lynn Walking Trail, Simon Pearce Glassblowing Factory & Retail Store and Maryland Scenic Byways. The Garrett County Chamber of Commerce’s annual Autumn Glory Kickoff Dinner featuring live musical entertainment and recognition of the annual Autumn Glory Golden Ambassador will kick off the festival on Wednesday, October 7 at Wisp Resort in McHenry.
Thursday features the Oktoberfest dinner and concert by the Oom-Pah band and a fireman’s parade. The week continues with historic area tours, antique and craft shows, fine arts exhibits, farmers’ market, 5-K walk, musical concerts, dogsled events, a quilt show, corn maze, art glass exhibits, outdoor adventures, quilt shows, food and drink specials, live entertainment, comedy basketball game, pumpkin chucking contest, horseback trail rides, shopping specials and a wide variety of other activities.

Garrett County Awarded Federal Sewage Grant
September 21st, 2015 by WCBC Radio U.S. Senators Barbara A. Mikulski and Ben Cardin together with Congressman John Delaney (all D-Md.) today announced that the Board of County Commissioners of Garrett County has been awarded nearly $1.3 million in federal grant funding to upgrade critical wastewater infrastructure serving businesses in Western Maryland and support continued job growth in the region. This federal funding is made available through the Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA) grant program. EDA is funded through the Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies (CJS) Appropriations Subcommittee, of which Senator Mikulski is the Vice Chairwoman. “This federal funding is great news for Western Maryland communities because it will support the creation of jobs today and jobs tomorrow,” said Senator Mikulski, Vice Chairwoman of the CJS Appropriations Subcommittee that funds the Commerce Department. “Maryland cities and towns need to upgrade their water and sewer infrastructure but they can’t do it on their own. I went to bat for Garrett County to secure this federal grant funding to make needed upgrades and updates to critical water and sewer infrastructure. I will continue to fight for infrastructure upgrades for Western Maryland to support a long-term roadmap for jobs and economic development.” “Investing in infrastructure is the right thing to do for our environment, public health and economy. For each public dollar we put into water infrastructure, for example, we see an increase in private long-term GDP output of more than six dollars,” said Senator Cardin, author of S. 741, The Water Infrastructure Resiliency and Sustainability Act. “The residents of Garrett County deserve proactive federal investments in their wastewater systems, making these EDA grants a wise investment in Western Maryland’s quality of life and economic growth.” –

Garrett commissioners suggest passive recreation use of Turkey Neck
OAKLAND — The chairman of the Garrett County Commission has sent a letter to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources suggesting a nearly one-acre tract of land in the Turkey Neck development be used for passive recreation, not public access.
“Public access is basically a boat launch for kayaks and canoes with a parking lot,” said Paul Edwards. “Passive recreation is basically preserving the land as is with no infrastructure improvements for people to bird watch, fish, etc.”
Mountain Maryland Energy Advisory Committee Recommends Solar, Biomass, and Energy Efficiency Projects
The Mountain Maryland Energy Advisory Committee (MMEAC) today presented its final recommendations to the Garrett County Board of Commissioners. These recommendations focused on solar power, biomass energy, and home energy efficiency.
Created in November 2013, the MMEAC has advised the Garrett and Allegany County Commissioners on local and state policy, regulation, programs, and legislation. The Committee guided energy planning in an attempt to maximize positive effects and minimize potentially negative consequences of energy production. Representing a diversity of perspectives, the 12 committee members are private citizens, business owners, and leaders in economic development, health, education, and recreation.
“Working with the Committee has been both enlightening and inspiring,” said Cheryl DeBerry, Natural Resources Business Specialist for Garrett County Economic Development. “Committee members and members of the public have provided us with some great ideas that will help Garrett County government as well as local businesses and residents learn about energy conservation and efficiency as well as sustainable energy development.”
