Del. Wendell R. Beitzel (R–Dist. 1A) and Sen. George C. Edwards (R– Dist. 1) joined many local people last Friday in requesting that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) give the residents of Garrett County a choice when it comes to their local television options.

Because of FCC designated marketing area rules, most Garrett County residents receive Pennsylvania TV stations, rather than Maryland ones, from cable and satellite companies.

Beitzel and Edwards introduced joint resolutions in the Maryland General Assembly for consideration in their respective chambers. House Joint Resolution 2, sponsored by Beitzel, was assigned to the House Rules and Executive Nominations Committee, which has not yet set a hearing date.

Senate Joint Resolution 2, sponsored by Edwards, was assigned to the Senate Finance Committee, which will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, Feb. 15, at 1 p.m.

In a recent letter sent to FCC chairman Julius Genachowski, Beitzel commented, “This is not just a mild inconvenience for the people who may be Baltimore Ravens or Washington Redskins fans. There is a more troubling byproduct.”

>Delegation speaks up on TV issue

OAKLAND — Two new voices have joined a virtual choir in Garrett County that is entreating federal officials to add Maryland television stations to the local channel lineup.

Sen. George Edwards and Delegate Wendell Beitzel introduced joint resolutions to the Maryland Senate and House on Friday, adding momentum to an issue that has vexed some residents for years.

The resolutions urge the Maryland Delegation to Congress to lobby the Federal Communications Commission — introducing legislation, if necessary — to amend its rules and allow Garrett County residents to receive broadcasts from stations in the Baltimore and Washington television market areas.

Currently, Garrett County is included in the Pittsburgh television market area, and most residents don’t have access to any Maryland-based television stations.

“This is not just a mild inconvenience for the people who may be Baltimore Ravens or Washington Redskins fans,” Beitzel wrote in a recent letter to FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski.

“There is a more troubling byproduct. The citizens of Garrett County are inundated with the political landscape of Pennsylvania. As a result, the average Garrett County resident may know more about the goings on of Harrisburg than they do of their own elected representatives in Annapolis.”

A group of concerned residents approached Beitzel and Edwards in early December during a prelegislative breakfast, asking the local delegation to put its weight behind the issue. The Garrett County Commission has also pledged support.

The resolution sponsored by Beitzel has been assigned to the House Rules and Executive Nominations Committee, according to a press release from his office. Senate Joint Resolution 2, sponsored by Edwards, has been assigned to the Senate Finance Committee. Hearings on the matters have not been scheduled yet.

“Garrett County is the only county in the state not included in either the Baltimore or Washington media markets,” Edwards said in a prepared statement. “We’re supposed to be ‘One Maryland,’ so we are only asking that our constituents be given the opportunity to join the rest of the state.”

A Deep Creek Lake resident has a seemingly simple aspiration – to watch a television station that offers Maryland sports, Maryland news, Maryland weather, and even Maryland campaign commercials. But complicated Federal Communications Commission (FCC) rules are impeding Chuck Hoffeditz’s wish.

“People in Maryland, especially Garrett County, want to watch Maryland television,” he told the county commissioners last week during a meeting with state Sen. George Edwards and Del. Wendell Beitzel.

To illustrate his point, Hoffeditz showed the officials a petition containing the signatures of more than 500 people who, indeed, would like to watch Maryland TV. Several of those petition signers attended the meeting and voiced their concerns to the local officials.

Because FCC regulations about only allowing one Designated Market Area (DMA), most local residents can only receive Pittsburgh, Pa., channels through their cable and satellite companies. Even Maryland Public Television is not available to many Garrett Countians, despite the fact that a MPT tower is located on Eagle Rock.

A few Comcast customers in the Finzel/Frostburg area, however, are more fortunate. Their DMA is larger, so they are able to view Pittsburgh, Johnstown (Pa.), Washington, D.C., and Baltimore stations. Hoffeditz would like to have that option, too.

Jay’s note: I remember the days where you could get both Pittsburgh & Washington/Baltimore TV stations – that’s how I cam to love the Steelers & the Redskins. I agree with Chuck, give us the choice!
