In the rush of everyday life, Garrett Countians surely often forget how lovely their home truly is, so it is most appropriate to set aside a weekend to celebrate the beauty of the Mountaintop, especially during this colorful season. The 44th annual Autumn Glory Festival was kicked off last evening at Wisp Resort, and a wide variety of events and activities are now in motion, slated for the rest of the weekend. Tonight is Oktoberfest, tomorrow are craft shows and the strings contest at Southern High School, Saturday’s downtown Oakland events will include the Grand Feature Parade along with numerous “streetside” events, and tomorrow night the banjos and fiddles will continue, and the 34th annual Western Maryland Tournament of Bands will take place at the Southern High athletic field. Crafts shows are set at the Garrett County Exhibition Hall at McHenry, and at Southern Middle and Broad Ford Elementary schools. A car show will take place in Oakland Sunday. And there is so much more. So happy autumn, Garrett County. Have fun this weekend! Photo by Lisa Broadwater, taken at Little Meadows.

Autumn Colors Abounding

Summer said farewell a few weeks ago, and with its exit are born the vibrant colors of autumn, the morphing tree leaves from green to orange and red, complemented by the late-blooming flowers like these marigolds and salvia. The Mountaintop is most surely beginning to clothe itself in the hues of the season, seeming to be readying for next week’s Autumn Glory Festival. See the special supplement all about the festival in today’s issue of The Republican. While temperatures dropped low even for Garrett County last weekend, and reportedly brought a few flakes of the white stuff, the mercury has climbed back up in the past few days, and the next week looks far more pleasant with 70-degree days and 40-degree nights. Forecast Right For Fall Colors to Shine Brightly

For the changing leaves to turn the richest colors in autumn, the region needs a particular blend of hot and cold weather.

“To have enhanced color, we need a dry fall, with cool nights and warm sunny days,” said Russ MacFarlane, a researcher with U.S. Forest Service.

With a forecast that calls for sunshine through next week, News4’s Veronica Johnson said conditions are “just perfect” to produce those bright colors.

In higher elevations of West Virginia and Virginia, reports have already been filed of foliage changing color. Some early change has already been spotted in the higher reaches of Maryland’s Garrett County.

Fall Foliage Update

From theBay.net
MARYLAND – 10/11/2010

Welcome to the Fall Foliage and Festival Hotline, brought to you by the Maryland Office of Tourism and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.
Well, the fall foliage is nearing peak in Garrett County and we’re getting word from Deep Creek Lake State Park that there is an abundance of gorgeous color to be seen. The region is basking in the glow of Indian summer with fantastic foliage conditions. In neighboring Allegany County, the leaves are still about a week, week-and-a-half from peak, with Washington and western Frederick counties expected to follow closely behind.

Reports from Green Ridge State Forest in Allegany indicate current conditions there are simply glorious. The maples and dogwoods have turned vibrant red, the hickories a golden yellow, the black gums, an orangish-red. Virginia creeper winding itself around the hickories is showing up a blazing scarlet, and the oaks are just now starting to change. The weekend should be mild and clear, with daytime highs in the low-70s and overnight temperatures falling into the mid-40s. So pack a couple sweaters and a jacket and you’ll be all set for a lovely weekend exploring the western wilds.

On your way out to Garrett County, consider making a stopover in Green Ridge State Forest, again reporting near-perfect conditions, and check out DNR’s self-guided driving tour of the forest. The “Fall Color Tour Guide” not only provides route descriptions through Green Ridge, but adds a bit of local folklore and historical information about the area as well. The complete tour is approximately 30 miles long and makes an enjoyable three-hour scenic drive, taking you through a change in elevation from 450 feet along the Potomac River to 1800 feet at the top of Town Hill. Spectacular vistas allow for views into the neighboring states of West Virginia and Pennsylvania, so don’t forget to take along your binoculars, cameras and field guides. Copies of the tour guide are available at the park’s headquarters.
