Deep Creek Lake and Garrett County continue to see record tourism increases

McHENRY — Deep Creek Lake and Garrett County have seen record increases in tourism during fiscal year 2018 (July 1, 2017-June 30, 2018) with a 6.3-percent increase in county accommodations sales, a 12.2-percent increase in heads on beds, a 3.9-percent increase in Admissions & Amusement collections, an 11.5-percent increase in visitors to the Chamber’s website, visitdeepcreek.com, and an 18.8-percent increase in Visitor Guide requests. The Chamber attributes much of the continued growth in tourism to their aggressive marketing plan with concentrated efforts and new ad strategies.

May turning into a green month, too?

Just take a peek outside your window and you’ll see that the right combination of warmth, rainfall and sunshine has transformed the outdoors into a verdant paradise.

Speaking of green, I hope everyone got a big tax return from Uncle Sam and has a nice stash of green in the bank.

No? Well then you might feel better knowing your tax dollars are already being put to work for noble causes here in Maryland. Gov. Larry Hogan (R) signed a new law, pithily coined the PRIME Act, which extends $3 billion in tax credits and exemptions to Amazon if they choose to locate their new headquarters in Montgomery County.

Partnership will expand high-speed internet in Garrett County

OAKLAND — A public-private partnership with Microsoft Corp. and Declaration Networks Group Inc. will expand rural broadband access in Garrett County.

The three-year agreement announced Tuesday will expand broadband internet access to approximately 65,000 people in Garrett County and two counties in the Eastern Shore of Virginia as part of Microsoft’s Rural Airband Initiative. The expansion to unserved homes and businesses will use a combination of fixed wireless and television white space deployments.

“Reliable access to high-speed internet is critical for Maryland’s small businesses, families and students to thrive in our 21st century economy,” Gov. Larry Hogan said. “We are working diligently to eliminate the rural broadband gap and ensure that all Marylanders have the opportunity to access trusted, cost-effective broadband solutions.”

Deep Creek Lake Vacation Rental Firm Celebrates 10th Anniversary

Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations & Sales, a leading vacation rental and sales firm located in McHenry, Maryland, is celebrating their tenth anniversary this month. There have been many changes in the past decade, but the company’s commitment to their guests, home owners and the community remains steadfast.

Jodi Taylor Refosco, her husband, Joe Refosco, and her brother, Chad Taylor, started the vacation rental management company in April of 2008. Each had many years of experience in the vacation rental and hospitality industries. Chad and Jodi were continuing a tradition that was started by their parents who previously owned a vacation rental firm. With only one home and no employees, Jodi, Joe and Chad did everything themselves. From lawn care and maintenance to reservations and housekeeping, the trio built the company from the ground up.
