Pet oxygen masks donated to Oakland VFD

— OAKLAND — Resident Michael McGuire recently donated two pet oxygen mask kits to the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department. McGuire, who works in anesthesia, donated the masks after seeing a photo in the newspaper of a firefighter resuscitating a dog with an oxygen mask made for a person.

“I have a lot of cats and dogs and realized the fire department didn’t have the right equipment,” said McGuire. “It’s very important to have a pet mask to ventilate a dog or cat. Because of the shape of their nose and mouth, they have a cone-shaped mask.”

McGuire purchased his mask from Wag’N Enterprises because he liked the fact that the masks came with special storage bags and decals.

“The decals make it easy for firefighters to determine which fire truck has the pet masks,” said McGuire.

In the future, McGuire plans on donating a mask to the Garrett County Sheriff’s Office for its K-9 unit, in case they ever get injured in the line of duty.

Pet oxygen masks are specially designed to fit the snouts of different sized animals as small as a ferret to as large as a foal. The masks are sold by Wag’N Enterprises through the O2 Fur Life initiative (www.wagnpetsafety.com), which has the goal of ensuring all first-responders in North America carry them. So far, Wag’N has placed masks in more than 1,200 departments in the U.S. and Canada. In 2010, the Regional Education Service Agency 8 purchased 22 pet masks for Mineral, Grant, Hampshire and Hardy and other numerous counties in West Virginia, according to a Wag’N 02 Fur Life list of supporters.

Dogs Saved After Falling Into Lake

Two dogs fell through the thin ice on Deep Creek Lake on Sunday, and a number of professional rescue personnel came to their rescue. A call came into 911 at about 6 p.m. reporting a dog having possibly fallen through the ice, and that the animal had been barking for some hours. The dog fell in around the Patterson Marina in the North Glade Cove, according to the report. Rescue personnel responded and found not one but two trapped canines barely keeping their heads above the frigid water.

Ice water rescue technicians from both the Deep Creek and Deer Park volunteer fire companies were deployed onto the ice and into the water to save the dogs. The animals were retrieved and immediately taken to the Pineview Veterinary Hospital for treatment. One of the animals is pictured above being cared for. Also responding to the scene were the Southern and Northern Garrett rescue squads. Rescue personnel urge pet-owners to be alert when their animals are near the ice, as it can obviously lead to perilous situations. Photo courtesy of Matthew Krause, area firefighter/paramedic.

Pets in parks – Deep Creek Lake, New Germany State Park

They’ll now be welcome in more places
Cumberland Times-News

— You might not be able to drink a beer or something stronger in Maryland’s state parks and forests, but beginning today you will be able to take your pets for a visit to the outdoors.

Maryland’s Park Service has revised its pet policy for visitors at parks that include Dan’s Mountain, Deep Creek Lake and New Germany.

With the exception of swimming beaches, they already were allowed in most areas of Rocky Gap, Big Run, Swallow Falls and Casselman River Bridge state parks.

The changes involve:

• Dan’s Mountain — Pets allowed with exception of weekends from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

• Deep Creek Lake — Pets allowed in boat ramp area to board vessels; in Discovery Center parking areas to access trails; to swim from shoreline in all areas except swimming beach, docks or fishing piers. From Labor Day to Memorial Day weekend, pets allowed in day-use areas and lake except for swimming beach.

• New Germany — Pets allowed in Pines camp loop and on trails except during ski season. From Labor Day to Memorial Day weekend, pets allowed in day-use areas and lake except for swimming beach.

The changes came about because of comments the park service began accepting from the public last October.

We sometimes believe that of our government and its agencies aren’t responsive to our wishes, but here’s an example that they do listen to us now and then.

Maryland weighs revising park pet policy

CUMBERLAND — Going to the park is a popular group activity, and visitors to Maryland’s state parks may soon be able to bring even more of their friends along.

The Maryland Park Service has begun taking public comments on a proposed plan to revise its pet policy and expand pet access in state parks.

According to the Maryland Park Service, the proposal was developed based on comments from park staff and visitors over the years.

Under the proposal, pet prohibitions in many of the parks throughout the state will be reduced. Parks that will allow pets greater access include Deep Creek Lake, New Germany State Park and Dan’s Mountain.

In particular, New Germany had previously prohibited pets entirely. Under the current proposal pets would be allowed year-round on trails and in the Pine Camp loop. Between Labor Day and Memorial Day weekend, pets will be allowed in the day-use area and lake.

Parks that will not be affected by the proposal include Big Run, Herrington Manor, Rocky Gap, Swallow Falls and Youghigheny Wild River. The policy already allows for pet access in these parks.

“We’re going to compromise with various opinions,” said Lt. Col. Chris Bushman, deputy superintendent of the Maryland Park Service. Bushman said that the Maryland Park Service has received comments with pro-pet and anti-pet views and intends to use them to fine-tune the proposal and address the unique nature of each park.

Park managers will still be able to prohibit pets from certain facilities in areas where they would otherwise be allowed, such as visitor centers and playgrounds. The policy will not affect service animals, which will still be allowed in all areas of the park open to their owners.

Bushman emphasized that the existing policies requiring pet owners to keep their pets on leashes and clean up after their pets will not change. “The park rangers and Natural Resources Police are on-site at these parks in the developed areas,” said Bushman. “We will not allow people to break those rules.“

After comments from the public and other parties have been reviewed and any necessary changes made, the new policy will be put into effect in early 2010.

Comments on the pet policy may be submitted online at http://dnrweb.dnr.state.md.us/publiclands/petpolicy/comment.asp and through mail at Pet Policy Comments, Maryland Park Service, 580 Taylor Ave., Annapolis, MD 21401. Comments will be accepted until Nov. 30.
