OTT To Present Farce

Feb. 23, 2012

Happily Ever Once Upon, a fairy tale farce, is being staged at Our Town Theatre in Oakland next week. “Have you ever wondered what happened after the ball was over?” asked director Christie Elmlinger. “This play checks in with Prince Charming and Cinderella 20 years after the clock struck midnight. We learn that the Enchanted Kingdom is broke, Cinderella’s fairy godmother is a blackmailer with a penchant for B-grade Western movies, and having five kids makes your feet so big the glass slippers no longer fit. Join us for an evening of laughter and love and see why the best fairy tales have real-life happy endings.”

The show will open Wednesday, Feb. 29, and run through Sunday, March 4. Productions start at 8 p.m. on all dates but March 4, when the show will start at 2 p.m. Tickets are $8 on Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday, and $10 on Friday and Saturday. The director noted that this show “is not a princess fairy tale for young children.” The play contains some adult themes and mildly foul language, and is appropriate for those age 14 and older. Elmlinger designed the set, Ben Sincell is the lighting designer, Emily Elmlinger is the stage manager, and Ted Hughes built the set. The cast is pictured. In the front, from left, are Joshua Elmlinger, Jen Shillingburg, and Tammy Beitzel. In the middle row, same order: Dylan Barnard, Hannah Newcomb, Matt Steyer, Nixon Malcolm, Becca Flinn, and Rachael Huxford. In back, armed with pistols, is Lynne Elmlinger. Reservations are recommended, and may be made by calling the theatre at 301-334-5640.

Our Town Theatre will host a comedy performance by Face Off Unlimited. The three-man touring show will present A Whole ‘Nother Level! on Friday, Aug. 26, 8 p.m., at the theatre in Oakland. “Completely unscripted and based on audience suggestions, three master improvisers fuse together live music, poetry, physical comedy, and performance art,” a spokesperson said. “Face Off sets out to prove that all things, no matter how seemingly different, are all connected in this non-stop comedy thrill ride.” The show has toured colleges and universities along the East Coast and received rave reviews, the spokesperson noted. The Huffington Post called it “a can’t-miss act” of the 2011 Chicago Improv Festival. The actors recently headlined at the Queens Fringe Festival. New York Times said the troupe is “really funny,” and CBS News New York said seeing the show is “one of the best things to do in NYC.” The trio – Joe Tex, Jay Painter, and Alexander L. Hill – have been seen on TruTV, MTV, and Funny or Die, as well as off-Broadway. Last month Face Off performed as part of the opening of the West Virginia Governor’s School of the Arts. Hill is originally from Oakland, and is the son of Richard and Melodee Hill. The show at OTT will be free to the public, with donations accepted. A pre-show “happy hour” will be held from 7 to 8, with beer and wine for sale by the glass. All guests must be 18 years or older. Reservations are required by calling 301-334-5640 or can be made online at www.ourtowntheatre.org. The trio will move on to Davis and Elkins College for a show on Saturday. Both Painter and Hill are D&E alumni. More information about Face Off Unlimited can be found at faceoff-unlimited.com.

Reservations are now being taken for OTT’s next stage production, an Irish comedy titled The Walworth Farce. The show, a dark Irish comedy written by Enda Walsh, will be given at the theatre in Oakland from March 30 through April 3, with shows at 8 p.m. on each date except April 3, when it will be presented at 2 p.m. Persons may make ticket reservations by calling the theatre at 301-334-5640. According to Jane Avery and Richard Hill, co-directors, the play is “a play within a play” about three Irish men, a father and two sons, who live in a rundown council flat on Walworth Road in south London. “They never leave and have not left for 20 years, and each day they perform a farce,” Hill said. “Each day the same, each day the same play. Only Sean leaves each day to buy the food for the play at Tesco, a supermarket in London.” Pictured from left are Dylan Barnard as Sean, Mikey Virts as Blake, Richard Hill as Dinny, and Jennifer Virts as Hayley, an employee of Tesco. The play is dark and irreverent, yet “hysterically funny,” Hill said. It is designed for mature audiences.

Lillian Hellman’s play about greed for power as well as money is being presented by Our Town Theatre next week. The focus of the story is on Southern aristocrat Regina Hubbard Giddens, who struggles for wealth and freedom within the confines of an early 20th century society where a father considered only sons as legal heirs. As a result, her brothers Benjamin and Oscar are independently wealthy, while she must rely upon her sickly, wheelchair-bound husband Horace for financial support. The show will open on Wednesday, Nov. 17, and run through Sunday. The show times are 8 p.m. on every day except Sunday, when a matinee will be given at 2 p.m. Reservations are strongly recommended and can be made by calling the theatre at 301-334-5640, ext. 1. The cost is $8 per person on Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday; and $10 per seat for Friday and Saturday.

The cast is pictured. Seated from left are Ashley Roush, Kieran Cannistra, Annette Beitzel, Dan Stiles, and Dan Beitzel. Standing in the same order are Frank Shap, Keven Kinney, Paul Blank, LeMichael Horne, and Tina James. The play is being directed by Jane Avery and stage-managed by Keenan Royalty. This production is recommended for ages 14 and above.

7th Anniversary Of Memorial Wall

Mother’s Day will mark the 7th anniversary of the memorial wall located on the property of Our Town Theatre’s Backstage building in Oakland. The wall was dedicated to all the citizens of Garrett County who “died too young.” The board of directors at Our Town Theatre opens up the list for additional names at this time every year. Persons who would like to add a young person’s name to the wall may do so by sending information to Jane Avery, artistic director. Each brick can contain three lines of print: the child’s first name forms the first line and his/her last name the second line, and the years of the person’s birth and death are the third line. Persons are asked to print this information neatly, or type it, and send it before May 31 to Jane B. Avery, c/o Our Town Theatre, 121 Center Street, Oakland, MD 21550.

Each brick costs $25. Persons are not asked to donate the money, but are welcome to do so if they wish. Avery said there is enough money in the memorial fund to carve two or three bricks. Those who would like to donate to the wall project may send a check made out to Our Town Theatre Special Projects to the address noted above. For more information, persons may call Avery at 301-334-5640, ext. #3.
