Oct. 13, 2011

Don Sincell, editor of The Republican newspaper and president of Sincell Publishing Company, was named the 2011 Honorary Golden Ambassador of the 44th annual Autumn Glory Festival during the festival kickoff dinner and reception held last night at the Wisp in McHenry.

Sincell, along with the 2009 winner of the award Bob Rudy, were the co-founders of the Oktoberfest that has been sponsored by the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department durign the Autumn Glory Festival for the past 33 years, and tonight will mark the 34th consecutive year that Sincell has played trombone in the band which he organized in 1978.

Sincell has also participated in the festival’s Grand Feature parade almost every year since he was in high school, occasionally either marching or riding in more than one unit in the same parade. Because members of the Ali Ghan Shrine Band are among those who play in the OVFD Oktoberfest band, Sincell typically plays trombone with that organization in the parade. He has also been a participant in the AGF Firemen’s Parade and worked a number of years with the annual AGF Tournament of Bands as a Southern High School Band Booster.

Sincell Publishing Company is the owner of the Front Page Stage in downtown Oakland, the use of which is donated every year during the festival for pre-parade entertainment.

Certainly Something To Celebrate

In the rush of everyday life, Garrett Countians surely often forget how lovely their home truly is, so it is most appropriate to set aside a weekend to celebrate the beauty of the Mountaintop, especially during this colorful season. The 44th annual Autumn Glory Festival was kicked off last evening at Wisp Resort, and a wide variety of events and activities are now in motion, slated for the rest of the weekend. Tonight is Oktoberfest, tomorrow are craft shows and the strings contest at Southern High School, Saturday’s downtown Oakland events will include the Grand Feature Parade along with numerous “streetside” events, and tomorrow night the banjos and fiddles will continue, and the 34th annual Western Maryland Tournament of Bands will take place at the Southern High athletic field. Crafts shows are set at the Garrett County Exhibition Hall at McHenry, and at Southern Middle and Broad Ford Elementary schools. A car show will take place in Oakland Sunday. Belle Vernon Area High School band brings home trophy

By Jeff Pikulsky, VALLEY INDEPENDENT
Wednesday, November 24, 2010

The Belle Vernon Area High School marching band was up to the challenge when asked to perform in a renowned out-of-state fall festival parade.

At its debut showing Oct. 9 at the 43rd Annual Autumn Glory Festival parade in Oakland, Md., the 125-member band took home first prize in its group.

The favorable response from the crowd and expert judges was validation that the band is a quality troupe, BVA band director Mark Surovchak said.

“It was a different experience all together,” he said. “To be that welcomed into a community by people who have no idea who you are, that’s one of the biggest things we took from it; how overwhelming their response was to the students. They did perform really well.”

The band routinely performs in local parades and festivals.

Surovchak said it was worthwhile to see how the students would respond to performing outside of their “comfort zone.”

“It was phenomenal,” he said. “There were at least 10,000 people that were on the street, about five rows deep. The students have never experienced a crowd like that in a parade.”

High School Principal Greg Zborovancik has attended the festival with his family for the about 15 years.

He suggested that Surovchak submit an application on behalf of the BVA band.

Surovchak said the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce placed the band in a category based on it having less than 70 wind and percussion instrument players.

There are 68 members of the band under that designation.

A nationally-certified panel of judges awarded the band with 94.5 points out of a possible 100, better than six other ensembles in the category.

MSN.com has rated the Autumn Glory Festival as one of the best fall festivals in the world, Surovchak said, adding that BVA’s high ranking in the event is a distinguished accomplishment.

“It just enhances their performance level that much more when they hear that response,” he said of the band. “The judges were very complimentary and pleased with how the students performed, and they gave some really nice remarks, too.

“We are so, so proud of our students. This was one of the biggest achievements in school history.”

School board member Joe Grata backed that statement.

He has several times attended the festival.

“Borrowing from baseball parlance, BVA hit a bases-loaded homerun before a mix of both Garrett County residents and the many Deep Creek Lake tourists who turn out each year for the Autumn Glory Festival,” Grata said. “This performance, like so many others, exemplified the large number of participants in BVA’s music, drama and arts programs and demonstrated the time, dedication and experience of both students and staff.”

Autumn Glory draws locals, out-of-towners

Megan Miller
The Cumberland Times-News Sun Oct 10, 2010, 07:59 AM EDT

— OAKLAND — Out-of-towners and locals alike thronged to Oakland Saturday for the 43rd annual Autumn Glory Festival.

In the early hours of the morning, empty chairs lined Second and Third streets, waiting for their owners to return for the Grand Feature Parade at 1 p.m.

Don Monroe set up chairs for himself and wife Dianne at 6:30 a.m. in the same spot where they’ve watched 14 of the last 15 Autumn Glory parades.

“I think it’s the most fun day in the town all year,” Dianne said.

The Monroes, originally from Florida, have made Oakland their permanent home.

“The first year we came here everyone raved about the festival and how fun it was. Then it snowed,” she laughed. “I thought, these people are out of their minds!”

But no snowflakes were on the sunny horizon Saturday. It was warm enough for Michael and Marla Miller to have customers at their homemade ice cream booth as soon as they opened up at 9:30 a.m.

“People said, ‘Ice cream for breakfast?’ And I said sure, you can do that!” Marla Miller said.

That wasn’t the only popular spot for food. By noon the line at the Oakland Rotary Club’s French fry stand stretched for nearly a block. It was rivaled only by the line, 20 deep, waiting to use the ATM at nearby M&T Bank.

Lois Stiles and Joyce Foster, both from the Oakland area, said the food is one of the things that draws them to the festival. The two had already taken their seats along the parade route by 10 a.m.

“We like to come out and watch the crowd,” Stiles said.

Minutes later, Gov. Martin O’Malley walked down the street, glad-handing his way through the spectators before climbing into a black SUV.

While some people waited along the parade route, others shopped through the Glorious Harvest Farmers Market and Craft Show held in a nearby pavilion.

Dee Simpson of Lonaconing held up three sparkling beaded bracelets she’d purchased for her granddaughters.

“I love it,” she said of the festival. “Everything up here is just nice.”

A few tables down the row, vendor Nancy Schrock straightened a display of baked goods. Schrock said she can only sell baked items at the festival for two days, because of how quickly she runs out.

“We spend too much time making things to get ready for Friday and Saturday,” she said. “We can’t make enough to get through all the days.”

At another table, Lois Haines Brown and daughter Michelle looked over artisanal cheeses from Firefly Farms in Accident.

The Browns, along with friends Todd and Cindy Sanders, are now from Windsor, Va. But Todd Sanders grew up in Oakland and still has family there.

For him, that’s part of the festival’s appeal.

“We enjoy the family camaraderie at the parade,” he said. “Everyone gets together.”

Day trip: Autumn Glory Festival in western Maryland

From the Baltimore Sun:

There is little argument that fall is one of the most beautiful seasons of the year. And spending some of it among the mountains of Western Maryland is a sure bet, even if all you do is take in the views. So if you’re looking for a change of scenery from your office cubicle, this week’s Autumn Glory Festival in Garrett County is more than worth the trip.

The 43rd annual fest offers dozens of activities taking place at a host of venues near Deep Creek Lake. There’s a Haunted Mountain Coaster at Wisp. A corn maze at Cove Run Farms. A Heritage Craft Festival and Quilt Show. An Oktoberfest Celebration in Oakland. A Great Pumpkin Festival at Adventure Sports Center International. And not to mention, a Grand Parade with marching bands, clowns and floats and a Royalty Court. That’s just the beginning of the fall fun at the five-day event, which was named the “#1 Fall Festival in the World” by msn.com.

The plan: Before you leave home, go to visitdeepcreek.com and download a festival brochure and map. It’s a bit of a drive to Garrett County, so plan on staying overnight. Depending on the weather, there should still be a few days left for camping, too. Once you decide on a base camp, fan out to whatever suits your fancy. The options are plentiful.
