Storm brings first substantial snowfall to western Maryland

GRANTSVILLE, Md. (AP) — The season’s first significant snowfall is coating the mountains of far western Maryland in white.

The National Weather Service says the storm Monday could drop 1 to 3 inches of powdery snow in the higher elevations of Garrett County. Flurries were also spotted around Baltimore and on the Eastern Shore.

State Highway Administration spokesman David Buck says moderate snowfall Monday morning is not sticking to Interstate 68 in western Maryland. He says no problems have been reported on side roads in the region.

Board mulls gas drilling restrictions near Deep Creek Lake

OAKLAND, Md. — The Garrett County Commissioners are considering a Deep Creek Lake watershed management plan that would restrict drilling for natural gas in the resort area.

What do you think?

The plan is up for discussion at Monday’s board meeting.

What do you think?

The plan was drafted in 2014. It would prohibit wellheads on 41,000 acres around the lake.

What do you think?

Some of that acreage overlies part of the gas-rich Marcellus shale rock formation. State environmental regulators are developing rules for allowing companies to drill for gas as early as 2017 using the technique called hydraulic fracturing, or fracking.
