GEARS Receives Grant To Increase Robotics Programs

Oct. 13, 2011

The Naylor Family Trust Fund, through the Community Trust Foundation, recently awarded the Garrett Engineering and Robotics Society (GEARS) with a grant that will make it possible for more Garrett County youth to participate in educational robotics activities.

Many youth development organizations, such as 4-H, Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts, are introducing robotics into their programs. Yet many more of these clubs lack either the financial resources or technical skill to embrace this new technology. In an effort to address this problem, GEARS will utilize its robotics activity, SuGO, to jumpstart local club-based robotics programs.

SuGO was developed by GEARS as a “friendly” robotics competition in which small teams design and build sumo-wrestling robots using the Lego mindstorms system. GEARS has been running monthly SuGO competitions for the past five years, but this new “SuGO outreach project” is, according to a spokesperson, designed to provide resources to enable local clubs to organize and run their own competitions.

Over the next two years, GEARS will seek out Garrett County clubs interested in learning more about robotics. GEARS will provide these clubs with outreach in the form of hands-on training, and robotic hardware (LEGO Mindstorms kits) purchased with funds provided by the Naylor grant.

SuGO “outreach mini-grants” will be available to clubs that meet regularly, operate under a parent organization, and have sufficient youth within the target age-group (8-14 years). Grant applications will be available online at www.SuGObot.com.

Gourds fly over Garrett County

Elaine Blaisdell Cumberland Times-News

OAKLAND — About 1,000 spectators gathered on Saturday to watch as five trebuchets and catapults launched pumpkins high into the sky.

The contest was part of 2011 FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition in Science and Technology) FRC Team 1629 second annual Pumpkin Chucking Contest, which was held in conjunction with Garrett County’s Aut-umn Glory celebration.

FRC is a division of FIRST, a robotics competition dedicated to students in Garrett County in grades 9 through 12.

“The Pumpkin Chucking Contest highlights the engineers of Garrett County. The contest gives everyone a chance to show their engineering (talent),” said Chuck Trautwein, who was in charge of the event and is affiliated with the FRC team.

The contest featured a wooden, slingshot catapult machine from FRC students and three professional catapults: one from Pillar Technology, of Swanton, and two catapults from Phenix Technology, of Accident.

The contest was based on throwing distance and target accuracy, according to Trautwein.

Amateurs launched pumpkins weighing four to six pounds and professionals used pumpkins weighing eight to 10.

The Phenix team won the distance portion of the contest with their Pumpkin Cannon and also won the accuracy portion of the contest with their trebuchet, according to Trautwein.

The crowd cheered as the Phenix team shot their pumpkins about 400 yards to the tree line. Other pumpkins, however, did not make it to the field and instead broke up mid-air.

“The Pumpkin Cannon shoots really far and you will get hurt if you stand to close to it,” said Blair Merrill, a 12-year-old Oakland resident, who attended the event.

Each team was given 20 pumpkins from Fratz Farm, Garrett County, to chuck, according to Trautwein.

Trautwein hopes to continue to make the contest an annual event.

The first contest, which was held last year had two teams, a professional and amateur team and was attended by 250 spectators.

Registration for the contest was free and was open to any team.

Don Sincell, editor of The Republican newspaper and president of Sincell Publishing Company, was named the 2011 Honorary Golden Ambassador of the 44th annual Autumn Glory Festival during the festival kickoff dinner and reception held last night at the Wisp in McHenry.

Sincell, along with the 2009 winner of the award Bob Rudy, were the co-founders of the Oktoberfest that has been sponsored by the Oakland Volunteer Fire Department durign the Autumn Glory Festival for the past 33 years, and tonight will mark the 34th consecutive year that Sincell has played trombone in the band which he organized in 1978.

Sincell has also participated in the festival’s Grand Feature parade almost every year since he was in high school, occasionally either marching or riding in more than one unit in the same parade. Because members of the Ali Ghan Shrine Band are among those who play in the OVFD Oktoberfest band, Sincell typically plays trombone with that organization in the parade. He has also been a participant in the AGF Firemen’s Parade and worked a number of years with the annual AGF Tournament of Bands as a Southern High School Band Booster.

Sincell Publishing Company is the owner of the Front Page Stage in downtown Oakland, the use of which is donated every year during the festival for pre-parade entertainment.

In the rush of everyday life, Garrett Countians surely often forget how lovely their home truly is, so it is most appropriate to set aside a weekend to celebrate the beauty of the Mountaintop, especially during this colorful season. The 44th annual Autumn Glory Festival was kicked off last evening at Wisp Resort, and a wide variety of events and activities are now in motion, slated for the rest of the weekend. Tonight is Oktoberfest, tomorrow are craft shows and the strings contest at Southern High School, Saturday’s downtown Oakland events will include the Grand Feature Parade along with numerous “streetside” events, and tomorrow night the banjos and fiddles will continue, and the 34th annual Western Maryland Tournament of Bands will take place at the Southern High athletic field. Crafts shows are set at the Garrett County Exhibition Hall at McHenry, and at Southern Middle and Broad Ford Elementary schools. A car show will take place in Oakland Sunday. And there is so much more. So happy autumn, Garrett County. Have fun this weekend! Photo by Lisa Broadwater, taken at Little Meadows.

Barns are stars of Western Maryland driving tour

By Donna M. Owens, Special to The Baltimore Sun

October 14, 2011
On a brisk autumn morning perfect for a leisurely drive, I set out from Baltimore en route to Maryland’s westernmost county.

With its rolling hills dotted with farms, mountain vistas and cornfields, plus dense forests gleaming with brilliant fall hues, rural Garrett County makes a stunning canvas for Mother Nature’s handiwork.

As the miles rolled by, making the city a distant memory, the ever-changing landscape unfolded like a good book.

Each stretch was a revelation filled with quaint finds and charming discoveries: tiny towns with names like Accident; an Amish farmer driving a horse and buggy; herds of sheep and cows grazing in open fields; roadside produce stands with pumpkins for sale.

It all proved the perfect backdrop for exploring the Garrett County Barn Quilt Tour. This self-guided driving trail features 14 rustic barns countywide, each adorned with likenesses of old-fashioned patchwork quilt blocks.

Md. redistricting plan adds insult to injury

Sen. E.J. Pipkin Cumberland Times-News

The congressional redistricting map for which Gov. O’Malley is seeking legislative approval ignores standards of continuity and compactness and puts together far-flung communities that do not share common interests or anything else in common.

And adding insult to injury, the governor has either forgotten or brazenly ignored Maryland’s ethnic and racial diversity in the process of redistricting.

The map is nothing but a political instrument which seeks to gain the ruling democrats a Republican congressional seat in Western Maryland and keep the seats of incumbent Democrats safe and sound. Redistricting continues to make a mockery of “one-man-one-vote.”

Redistricting has become and continues to be a vehicle for building partisan power in Congress.

On the plus side, the map keeps the Eastern Shore in the First Congressional District. However, the new map of the First District drops Anne Arundel County and goes west to include a large part of Carroll County, Baltimore and Harford County.

Certainly, the Eastern Shore has more in common with Anne Arundel County than Carroll County which is located in Western Maryland.

The heavy Republican Sixth District used to stretch across the northern border of the state.

The new map keeps rural Western Maryland in the district, but dumps one-third of Montgomery County residents (330,000 people) into the Sixth District, threatening Republican Congressman Roscoe Bartlett’s seat and making it possible for a Democrat to win the seat and difficult for a Republican to keep it.

Montgomery County is heavily Democratic, liberal, rich, college educated and racially and ethnically diverse. By contrast, Garrett County residents are overwhelmingly Republican, conservative, modestly educated and white. Montgomery and Garrett County could not be further apart.

If there is a community of interest between Garrett and Montgomery County I wish someone would tell me what it is.

Those who drew the map wanted to dilute both the First and Sixth District with Democrat populations to capture the two congressional seats.

Although the map drawers possessed awesome agility, they found that task beyond their talents. So, they contented themselves with destroying only the conservative Sixth District.

The map has several weird configurations where lines become loops to allow Congressman Steny Hoyer to have the University of Maryland, College Park in his district and to assure that Congressman Dutch Ruppersburger’s home is in the Second District, as are Fort Meade and Aberdeen, which he requested.

The Second District is made up of parts of Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Anne Arundel County and Harford County. Baltimore city Congressman John Sarbanes, who represents the Third Congressional District wanted the city of Annapolis in his district, and the new map gives it to him.

When the special session convenes, I will submit a redistricted map that that is geographically, racially and culturally compact and cohesive.

This map will have rural Maryland represented by three districts:

The First District includes the Eastern Shore, Harford County and portions of Baltimore County.

The Sixth District includes the five Western Maryland counties of Garrett, Allegany, Washington, Frederick and Carroll, plus portions of Northern Baltimore County.

The Third District will be composed mainly of the historically tobacco producing rural counties of Anne Arundel, Calvert and St. Mary’s.

This map’s three Majority-Minority districts: Districts 4, 5 and 7 contains African-American populations of 52 percent, 56 percent and 57 percent, respectively. Their total minority population represents 74 percent, 68 percent and 64 percent, respectively.

The Fourth District is a DC Beltway District. The Fifth District is a Suburban Washington, DC/I-95 District. The Seventh District is the Baltimore City District. The remaining Districts, the Second and Eighth, are both geographically suburban.

If the goal of redistricting is to be fair and accurate representation, the governor’s plan misses by a country mile. My plan meets these goals and fully represents the citizens of Maryland.

Sen. E.J. Pipkin

District 36

Eagle died naturally, NRP says

Northern Goshawk shooting investigation continues

Michael A. Sawyers Cumberland Times-News

CUMBERLAND — A postmortem examination revealed that a bald eagle found dead along Hazen Road in mid-September died of natural causes, not from a gunshot as originally suspected.

“The case is closed,” said Sgt. Art Windemuth of the Maryland Natural Resources Police. “A necropsy performed by Dr. Kelly Malec-McConnell showed that the hole in the eagle’s breast was made after the bird was already dead.”

The dead adult bird was discovered on the afternoon of Sept. 16 in the 14000 block of Hazen Road near Evitts Creek in northern Allegany County.

The Times-News was unable to reach Malec-McConnell at the LaVale Veterinary Hospital on Wednesday to inquire about the gender, weight and age of the eagle or about what may have caused the post-death hole in the bird.

An open investigation continues in the shooting of a northern goshawk in Garrett County in June, said NRP Officer Jim Satterfield on Wednesday.

“We have exhausted all leads. There is, unfortunately, no new information,” Satterfield said. A DNR biologist discovered the bird’s remains.

That female northern goshawk, described by Maryland Department of Natural Resources officials as the only known breeding bird of its species in the state, was killed by a blast from a 12-gauge shotgun and her three chicks were left to die in Savage River State Forest near Grantsville.

There is a $1,000 reward in this case offered by the Maryland Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus and an $800 reward by the Maryland Ornithological Society.

Information about the crime may be relayed to police at 800-635-6124.

The northern goshawk is a large forest bird of prey that was driven from the state in the early 1900s by rampant timber harvesting, DNR officials said. An adult has a length of 19 inches and a wingspan of 42 inches.
