Canoe championships set Saturday

For the Cumberland Times-News

Cumberland Times-News The Cumberland Times-News Sat Aug 06, 2011, 11:28 PM EDT

— MCHENRY — Competitors from around the region will participate in the first-ever Maryland Canoe and Kayak State Championships at the Adventure Sports Center International from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday.

The center is home of the world’s only mountaintop whitewater course. The championship is part of the 2011 Maryland Canoe and Kayak Series produced by the Bethesda Center of Excellence.

BCE is led by two-time Olympic silver medalist Dana Chladek and will be fielding a team of up-and-coming athletes at the event. The state championships will be a first glimpse of whitewater competition at ASCI since it was awarded the ICF 2014 Canoe Slalom World Championships.

ASCI won out over bids from Austria and Poland at the April meeting of the International Canoe Federation in Paris. Deep Creek 2014, the official title of the championships, is scheduled for Sept.17-21. The event will mark the 25th anniversary of the highly successful 1989 Canoe Slalom World Championships held on Savage River in Garrett County. Canoe slalom refers to decked or covered whitewater boats that race a series of gates strategically placed over rapids. The four official Olympic disciplines include single men and women’s kayak, and single and double canoes.

Maryland has historically fielded the nation’s most successful slalom athletes, including World Champions Jon Lugbill, Davey Hearn, Fritz and Lecky Haller, Cathy Hearn, Dana Chladek and Olympic Gold Medalist Joe Jacobi. Bill Endicott, the most successful canoe coach in U.S. history, is also based in Maryland.

The Maryland State Championships will be the first and only state-level whitewater competition in the county. They will take place on the upper section of the ASCI whitewater course. Each run lasts around 100 seconds, and athletes must navigate 20 gates covering 300 meters of rapids. At least six of the gates require athletes to paddle upstream. Hitting the poles or missing a gate entirely adds penalties to a score.

The score is a racer’s time plus penalties, and the lowest score wins. Spectators can watch from rocks alongside the river or from the grass-sloped amphitheater.

Competitors from around the region will compete in the first ever Maryland Canoe and Kayak State Championships at the Adventure Sports Center International (ASCI), home to the world’s only mountaintop whitewater course, on Saturday, Aug. 13, from 4 to 6 p.m.

The championship is part of the 2011 Maryland Canoe and Kayak Series produced by the Bethesda Center of Excellence. BCE is marketed as the nation’s premier slalom canoe/kayak training center and is home to two-time Olympic silver medalist Dana Chladek. Chladek is the BCE head coach and will field a team of “young up and coming athletes” at the event.

The state championships will be a first glimpse of whitewater competition at ASCI since it was awarded the International Canoe Federation’s 2014 Canoe Slalom World Championships. ASCI won out over bids from Austria and Poland at the April meeting of the ICF held in Paris.

“Deep Creek 2014,” the official title of the ICF 2014 Canoe Slalom World Championships, is scheduled for September 17 through 21. The event will also mark the 25th anniversary of the highly successful 1989 Canoe Slalom World Championships held on the Savage River in Garrett County.

Canoe slalom refers to ‘decked’ or ‘covered’ whitewater boats which race a series of gates strategically placed over rapids. The four official Olympic disciplines are: single men and women’s kayak (where athletes sit in the boat and use a double bladed paddle) and single and double canoe (where athletes kneel in the boat and use a single bladed paddle).

Maryland has historically fielded the nation’s most successful slalom athletes, including world champions Jon Lugbill, Davey Hearn, Fritz and Lecky Haller, Cathy Hearn, Dana Chladek and Olympic gold medalist Joe Jacobi. Bill Endicott, who is heralded as the most successful canoe coach in U.S. history, is also based in Maryland. Affordable housing not just ‘dollars and cents’

Stephanie Weaver

The Cumberland Times-News Fri Aug 05, 2011, 10:56 PM EDT

— OAKLAND — Offering a new option for members of Garrett County’s work force, the state’s top housing official said, “this is not just about dollars and cents” at the grand opening and dedication of Liberty Mews townhomes.

“We are celebrating 36 new families in your community,” Ray Skinner, secretary of Maryland Housing and Community Development, said.

However, the project started with a last-minute hunt for funding, according to Duane Yoder, president of the Garrett County Community Action Committee.

The group went to Skinner for help after being denied funds from other sources who “didn’t do rural projects.”

Skinner said he could aid the project if “they broke ground in less than 30 days and were completed in two years.”

His solution was economic stimulus money. “Stimulus money made it happen,” he said.

According to Yoder, the group got to work right away. The two-year construction project “help-ed economic development di-rectly,” and Skinner estimates that $10 million went back into the county.

Liberty Mews, located on Mews Crescent Drive, is comprised of 36 townhomes for the low-income work force. It’s part of an even bigger project called River Hill, an entire development of affordable housing for the county just a walk away from the center of Oakland.

“Housing is such a visible part of our community,” Lowell Bender, a member of the Garrett County Community Action Committee Board said, when driving around the town.

Skinner saw a need for affordable housing given the “income level and high unemployment” in Garrett County. Affordable housing for the work force is a big part of the county’s economic development plan, according to Yoder.

“I don’t know if you’ll ever have enough,” he said.

He and Community Action have been working on the project for about 15 years, including other affordable housing called the Yough and the Glades. The grand opening of Liberty Mews marked the 15th anniversary of the Glades.

“We keep going ahead,” he said, also stating that he didn’t know if he could take 15 more years of it.

Devlin Inc. of Pittsburgh constructed the 12 buildings that contain 10 two-bedroom and 26 three-bedroom townhomes. All models have Energy Star appliances and lighting, garages and private porches or terraces.

“I’m really pleased with the project,” previous Mayor Asa McCain said.

Townhome applications are being accepted by Community Action.

Reel Report: Get fishing before school starts up

By James Drake

Those people who keep track of such things tell us this past July was the hottest month on record.

And, not only was it the hottest July, but the hottest anything….

Deep Creek Lake — The largemouths are finally starting to make an appearance. LOU guides Bret Winegardner and Brent Nelson are finding them around both grass beds and boat docks while throwing wacky-rigged plastics along with frogs, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits and chatterbaits.

For the smallmouth, the best areas continue to be the park shoreline, offshore humps and rocky shores and coves toward the dam. If you seek those big Deep Creek bluegill, try around the docks and also look along the grassbeds and in stump fields.

Energy company gives $250K to group headed by O'Malley

Exelon trying to buy BGE parent company

The energy company trying to buy the parent of Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. gave $250,000 last quarter to the Democratic Governors Association, led by Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, according to a report released Monday.

Made June 20, the contribution by Chicago’s Exelon Corp. was the largest donation the governors group received in the first half of 2011, the organization’s midyear Internal Revenue Service report indicated.

Exelon gave to the Democratic organization, whose current chairman is Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley, because of its demonstrated support for “sound energy policy,” said Exelon spokesman Paul Elsberg.

“Exelon’s contribution supports the Democratic Governors Association’s national energy policy symposium series taking place across the country,” he said.

TOTL Theatre Company To Stage Garrett County Premier Of Musical

Jul. 28, 2011

TOTL (Theatre on the Lake) Theatre Company, under the direction of Lynn Broderick, is currently in the final stage of rehearsal for the Garrett County premiere of an original musical titled Mabel’s Story.

Conceived and written by Broderick, the musical is the inspiring story of Garrett County native Mabel Lorraine Brenneman, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 15. Broderick and Brenneman met at Preston High School during the school year in 2003.

“Mabel was a student in my Drama 1 class, and her sister Ellen was in Stagecraft,” said Broderick. “It was actually Ellen who broke the news to me about Mabel.”

Although Mabel made it through her class, it was not until her senior year that she registered for Broderick’s advanced drama class. It was during an assignment for that class that Broderick connected the subject matter of an improvisation to Mabel’s year of chemotherapy.

“I remember going up to her after the performance,” Broderick said. “She was sitting on the edge of the stage and we were about to begin the critique. I said to her, ‘This really happened to you, didn’t it.'”

Her affirmative response led to more questions and, by the following day, Broderick said she had decided that Mabel’s story needed to be told.
