>Garrett CEO becomes Catholic deacon

>Michael A. Sawyers
The Cumberland Times-News Tue Jun 28, 2011, 11:33 PM EDT

OAKLAND — The four-year journey to become a Catholic deacon tested not only Donald Battista’s character and commitment, but his automobile as well.

After 37,576 miles, two sets of tires and zero speeding tickets, Battista was ordained to the Roman Catholic Order of Permanent Deacon on May 14 at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen in Baltimore.

Battista could do it blindfolded — drive to Baltimore, that is.

“If it was Friday night we were in a motel in Columbia and then on Saturday we went into Baltimore for the classes,” said Patricia, Don’s wife, who accompanied him on every 3.5-hour trip to Baltimore and the return trip to Garrett County.

“A lot of people presume I am more spiritual or more of something than others, but I’m not. I just answered the call in a spirit of humility. I simply committed more deeply than in the past,” Don Battista said. “I’m humbled and I’m overjoyed.”

The role of the deacon in the church is increasing, he said. “During the next 10 years, the number of priests will be reduced by half. It is possible that some deacons will find themselves handling administrative duties at parishes.”

As for his own role as a deacon, Battista said he may perform weddings, baptisms, wake services, funerals, benedictions and blessings.

Battista is the president and CEO of Garrett County Memorial Hospital. He said any work as a deacon within the hospital would come at the direction of the parish to which he is assigned, St. Peter the Apostle in Oakland.

Battista said he has distinct respect for his role at the hospital and his role with the church and would not mix the two.

In 2007, 48 men applied to be deacons within the Archdiocese of Baltimore; 21 began the program and 14 were ordained.

Battista’s training and internship included work in Morgantown, W.Va., with hospital patients and West Virginia University students.

“Don would leave Monday afternoons for Morgantown and I would make supper for him and the students,” Patricia Battista said. She also kept a log of the four-year spiritual adventure.

There were 72 round trips to Baltimore, 157 round trips to internship sites, 627 hours behind the wheel, 70 nights in motels and 2,237 gallons of gas involved.

“I’m pretty sure I qualified as the deacon candidate who traveled the greatest distance,” Don said.

Jun. 23, 2011

Overall there will be few instructional programs significantly impacted within the Board of Education’s fiscal year 2012 budget.

The school system did have additional grant reductions within Title I and Perkins II-C Career and Technology Grants, which will be reduced by approximately $29,000.

Hickory Environmental Education Center summer program will be reduced from a five-week residential program to a potential two-week day camp. BOE representatives have stated that this initiative is in process.

Funds for Academic Intervention will also be reduced. While funding is still available at all instructional levels, there will be reductions primarily at the middle and high school levels. Transportation for Academic Intervention will be included in the budget.

The Alternative program bus that transported students from the northern end of the county to Southern High School has been eliminated. The Alternative program will be retained, however, and will now be provided by each school individually, utilizing current staff.

Jun. 23, 2011

The Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) has awarded a $107,000 grant to the Garrett County Board of Commissioners to make electrical upgrades at the McHenry Business Park.

The grant will be used to extend power lines to the park, which is owned and operated by the county. The county hopes the electrical upgrade will attract high-power users, such as technology-based and small component businesses to the park.

“The funding for McHenry Business Park will strengthen Garrett County’s economy by bringing high-tech businesses and jobs to the community,” said Sen. Ben Cardin, who, along with Sen. Barbara Mikuski, announced the ARC grant award last Friday.

>Outdoors: BLACK BEAR LOTTERY

>By CHRIS D. DOLLAR, For The Capital
Capital Gazette Communications Published 06/26/11

BLACK BEAR LOTTERY: Maryland Black Bear Lottery Opens July 1. Entering its eighth year, Maryland’s black bear hunting season is scheduled for Oct. 24-29. The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will accept applications for this year’s lottery for hunting permits beginning July 1. DNR will issue 260 bear hunting permits with a quota of 55-80 bears and will close the hunt when the quota is reached.

In a DNR press release, big game biologist Harry Spiker said the black bear population growth rate has slowed in Garrett County since the hunting season was established in 2004, but continues to increase in Allegany County and in areas east.

This year’s lottery will follow the same model-the Preference Point System-established in 2007 but the application period has been extended by a month. Under the system, hunters who apply receive one entry in the random drawing as well as one additional entry for each consecutive year they have applied. For example, those hunters who applied unsuccessfully in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 will receive five entries in the drawing when they apply this year.

Online applications for the Maryland Black Bear Lottery will be accepted from 9 a.m. on July 1 until 11:59 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 2. Phone applications will be accepted at 1-888-579-6768 between 9 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 22-26 only. Send a $15 non-refundable application fee (credit card, check, or money order) to MDDNR Black Bear, P.O. Box 360, Frostburg, MD 21532. All payments must be received by 12:00 p.m. on Monday. Checks and money orders should be made payable to MDDNR Black Bear.

Best-selling author Martha Grimes was the guest of honor at a special program presented by the Mayor and Town Council of Mountain Lake Park Saturday afternoon. In front of a standing-room-only crowd in the town hall, Grimes spoke about the characters and locations in her four-book series that center on the town, and more specifically on the Mountain Lake Park Hotel during its heyday years of operation. The main character in those books is 12-year-old Emma Brown, whose mother was a co-owner of the hotel, as was the case with Grimes’ mother in real life. “Emma is indeed autobiographical; however, she represents not the person I was, but the person I would have liked to have been at that age,” Grimes said. Grimes is best known internationally for her 22-novel Richard Jury mystery series, one book of which garnered her the coveted Nero Wolfe Award for Best Mystery of the Year. The Mayor and Town Council presented to her an original painting of the Mountain Lake Park Hotel, partially visible in the photo above, and also unveiled a permanent historical plaque featuring her and her books that will be placed on an exhibit stand in front of the town hall facing the former MLP Hotel property. Holding the plaque in the photo above are town council member Don Sincell and Mayor Leo Martin (far right). Also in the photo with Ms. Grimes is Kathryn Sincell-Corwell, far left, who coordinated the Martha Grimes Day event and also arranged for the painting of the hotel. Following the program, Grimes signed copies of her books for scores of interested readers. A resident of the Washington, D.C., area, Grimes was accompanied by her son Kent, daughter-in-law Travis, and two grandsons. Photo by John McEwen.

Natural Resources Careers Conference accepting applications from teens By Carrie Ann Knauer, Times Staff Writer Carroll County Times | 0 comments

Natalie Crabbs was going into her senior year at Francis Scott Key High School in 1998 when she signed up for the Natural Resources Careers Conference.

The week-long camp, held in Western Maryland, gave her a glimpse of what it would be like to work in natural resources, and specifically in forestry.

“I had always wanted to do some type of job in natural resources at that time,” she said, so she was very enthused when she was accepted to the program….
