Maryland DNR Registration Now Open For Becoming An Outdoors Woman

Swanton, MD - (Ammoland.com) – The Maryland Department of Natural Resources announces that registration is now open for the next Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) weekend workshop to be held Friday, October 22 through Sunday, October 24 at the Western Maryland 4-H Center in Garrett County near Deep Creek Lake.

BOW enables women to learn about a wide variety of outdoor opportunities in a casual, non-threatening environment.

“The program is designed to be hands-on, giving participants enough knowledge to further pursue their interests once the workshop is over,” said Patty Allen, Maryland BOW state coordinator.

Participants may choose from more than 30 classes, including outdoor photography, geocaching, turkey and deer hunting, fly fishing, hiking, kayaking, outdoor survival skills and many others. In addition, BOW places special emphasis on the camaraderie that goes along with outdoor recreation.

These outdoor skills workshops are offered specifically for women 18 years of age and older; however, men are also welcome.

For more information or to register for the upcoming workshop, visit http://www.dnr.state.md.us/wildlife/Education/bow/index.asp

Park Quest 24/7, the end - Outdoors Girl

She did it! Congrats Candy Thomson!

From her blog:

I started at sun up at water’s edge one week ago in Garrett County and ended minutes ago at the Atlantic Ocean.

In between, I visited some of Maryland’s prettiest public lands — 24 parks, all different, all worth seeing — in seven consecutive days.

During Park Quest 24/7, I met some tremendous public servants and volunteers.

Park Quest 24/7: Nearing the finish line - Outdoors Girl

This morning I pulled the last T-shirt from my duffel bag. It’s red, for stop.

I’m in my final day of Park Quest 24/7, a personal challenge: visit all 24 state parks across the state participating in the state’s annual Park Quest contest in seven consecutive days.

I’ve been wearing a different color shirt each day, partially to remind me that I’ve turned a page and partially to ensure that, well, I remain nominally presentable.

On Day One in Garrett County last Wednesday, the shirt was green for go. Then it was cream, purple, light blue, pink and yellow.

Avoiding the trap - Outdoors Girl Maryland Park Quest

Following the progress of Candy Thomson as she passed through Garrett County yesterday:

July 7, 2010
Avoiding the trap
Third Quest in the can and it’s not even noon yet.

Can I do five parks in one day?

Ranger Dave Best and I walked along the water’s edge at Deep Creek Lake State Park and through the woods looking for the five metal medallions that tell the story of the park and its resources.

Made a rubbing of each to complete the Quest.

Temperature is near 90 now. Still, making my first three stops near the water has made a big difference.

Off to New Germany State Park now.”

Candy Thomson - Baltimore Sun - Outdoors Girl Blog

So, I read her piece on the Maryland Park Quest yesterday, blogged about it and then had an idea - what if I could meet her while she was in Garrett County? Well, I sent her a quick email, she liked the idea and we just finished meeting at the Deep Creek Lake Discovery Center. Candy Thomson, the ‘Outdoors Girl’, is in Garrett County for the Maryland Park Quest ‘marathon’ of 24 state parks in 7 days. She’s done with 3 and on her way to New Germany State Park next, hoping to finish up the day at Rocky Gap.

She camped last night at Swallow Falls and hit the Garrett County park trail at 7am. Next, off to Herrington Manor and then...Deep Creek Lake State Park. It worked out perfectly to meet her at the Deep Creek Lake Discovery Center - where she was greeted to a hero’s welcome by the staff and Patty Manown Mash. You could tell they were all following her quest (and they are all readers of the ‘I Love Deep Creek’ blog, too, apparently - thanks for the great comments!)

She promised to be up again for the black bear hunt in October, and I agreed to attend, as well! She says she loves it up here and loves coming back!

Without wanting to hold her up from the rest of her Quest, she smiled for a quick photo in front of the lake, and was off to New Germany...good luck, Candy!

Maryland Park Quest becomes an outdoors marathon - Balt. Sun Blog

Be on the look out for Candus Thomson, the popular ‘outdoors girl’ blogger from the Baltimore Sun. She is embarking on Maryland Park Service’s Park Quest, starting Wednesday at Swalllow Falls. (from the blog):

The premise, as sketched on a grease-infused paper plate, is fairly simple. Complete the Maryland Park Service’s Park Quest—a free popular summer-long activity that has attracted 750 families this year—in one week. That’s 24 parks, stretching from Deep Creek Lake in Western Maryland to Assateague Island on the Atlantic Coast, in seven days.

I’ll blog about it at the end of each day.

Park Quest is part-hike, part-scavenger hunt, part-geocache, with a little history and geography lesson sprinkled on top for good measure.

The theme for this year’s event is, Where a Family Becomes a Team. Teams must include at least one adult and one child 16 years of age or younger, but can be as large as 10 people to include extended family. Teams must complete at least 10 Quests by Sept. 6 to be eligible for the Park Quest Finale on Sept. 11 at the Hammerman Area of Gunpowder Falls State Park, where they could win camping gear, kayaks and vacation packages.

Deep Creek Lake Discovery Center - Photos

Here are some more cool photos that we took at the Deep Creek Lake Discovery Center last week:

There are so many cool things to do there, interesting activities scheduled almost every day and the setting is amazing. I promised Noah to take him back to the kids corner to play with the BIG turtle...I also noticed a chart tracking the sightings of 2 bald eagles that were observed flying and touching talons - apparently, it was a sign of kinship amongst the birds. Interesting stuff at the DCL Discovery Center!! More from their website:

The Deep Creek Lake Discovery Center, the Department of Natural Resources’ interpretive environmental center along the shores of Deep Creek Lake at Deep Creek Lake State Park. The Discovery Center is a one-of-a-kind educational venue for people of all ages. Through hands-on exhibits that showcase the natural resources of Western Maryland, families can learn about the flora and fauna, wildlife, cultural and historical heritage that have turned this former logging and coal mining region into a popular modern day vacation destination.

Through colorful artwork, photographs and artifacts, the facility’s numerous natural resources exhibits provide a behind the scenes look into Deep Creek Lake and its watershed, industrial development in the area, and conservation issues facing the region today. History buffs will enjoy learning about the cultural and historical heritage of the region, including coal extraction from the former Old Brant Mine, and the role the mighty Youghiogheny River played in timber logging at the turn of the century. The Deep Creek Lake Discovery Center also features an aquarium with native fish and other aquatic species from the lake and river, and a raised relief map that gives visitors a unique perspective of the mountainous terrain.

On-site naturalists, rangers and volunteers lead daily educational programs, from leisurely hikes that focus on birdwatching, tree identification and wildflowers, to more extensive educational programming that touches on such subjects as black bear management, endangered species of the Youghiogheny area, submerged aquatic vegetation, boating safety, and trail stewardship.

The Deep Creek Lake Discovery Center’s 6,000 square foot facility also includes a classroom and conference areas complete with audio visual technology that is available for rent for use for educational purposes. Don’t forget to stop by the Nature Shop, where you’ll find a variety of environmental and educational gifts including toys, souvenirs from the region, field guides, and books with natural resource themes.

Don’t forget to check out the LIVE Fish Cam that was donated by the Western Garrett County State Park Volunteers, Inc. The camera is located underwater near the Discovery Center. A TV in the Discovery Center shows the LIVE feed and what fish are moving around underwater that day. Anglers stop at the Discovery Center to check on the fish because Christmas trees line the shores of the park creating excellent habitat and try to name the fishes spotted on the screen. Watch a video of our LIVE Fish Cam.
Deep Creek Lake State Park is located at 898 State Park Road in Swanton, Maryland.

For more information about the Deep Creek Discovery Center call (301) 387-7067.

Hours of operation subject to change depending on the season.

Hours of operation: Open Daily 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m

DNR Amends Alcohol Policy In State Forests

Support the Republiucan Newspaper! It’s only $9.95/year for the online edition!

May. 27, 2010

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is amending its alcohol policy on public lands to provide for a limited exception for state forest campsites, effective immediately. The policy prohibiting alcohol in all Maryland state parks, including family campgrounds, remains in place.

“We are grateful to the citizens and elected officials of western Maryland who gave us the opportunity to hear their voices in person on this matter,” said DNR Secretary John Griffin. “They persuaded us that many of the disruptive and unacceptable behaviors which formed the basis of the alcohol policy in the family-style campgrounds found in state parks do not apply to the same degree in the more isolated individual campsites found in the remote settings in our state forests.”

DNR will continue to monitor the number and type of incidents and unacceptable behavior associated with the consumption of alcoholic beverages on state forests. Additional restrictions may be imposed in the future only if incidents increase to a level which interferes with the ability of state forest visitors to enjoy a peaceful and safe camping experience, or the Department’s resource protection objectives are compromised by the irresponsible consumption of alcohol.

The Department will pursue the possibility of new partnerships with county tourism and retail liquor stores to establish a public outreach effort to educate state forest visitors about drinking responsibly and employing “Leave No Trace (LNT) Ethics,” a policy DNR has been promoting in its parks.

In order to preserve the beauty and serenity of Maryland’s state forests, visitors are asked to leave their campsites litter-free, refrain from nailing and cutting trees, report vandalism of recreation facilities, pack out all food waste, and be considerate of others. A public outreach effort will strive to raise the level of compliance with LNT ethics, in order to improve campsite conditions and the outdoor recreation experience in the state forests.

Their treat: Cops to give free desserts to kids in life jackets

From the Outdoors Girl blog:

From Deep Creek Lake to the waters around Ocean City, kids wearing life jackets while boating this summer could win a free dessert for putting safety first.

Following the worst season for boating fatalities in more than a decade, Maryland Natural Resources Police officers will be giving away coupons for Rita’s Italian Ice as part of a stepped up education and enforcement program. Also, coupons will be given out wherever the colorful “Wear-it, Maryland” truck is on display.

The coupons are good for a free Italian ice at any of Rita’s 80 Maryland shops.

Last year, Maryland had 16 fatal accidents, resulting in 17 deaths--the highest number in more than a decade. Sixteen of the 17 victims were not wearing life vests.

Western Md. Group Aims For Deep Creek Trail Link

CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) ― Some western Maryland tourism promoters says they’re seeking state support for a proposed biking and hiking trail that would link Deep Creek Lake to the Great Allegheny Passage.

Savage River Lodge owner Mike Dreisbach (DRYS’-bahk) is president of Mountain Maryland Trails and vice president of Garrett Trails.

He says the proposed Continental Divide loop would connect to the Great Allegheny Passage at Meyersdale, Pa., and Confluence, Pa.

Dreisbach says the proposal is on the agenda for a western region roundtable that the Department of Natural Resources will hold June 3 at Greenbrier State Park near Boonsboro.

Traffic Pattern Changes Enacted For DCL Boaters

Support the Republiucan Newspaper! It’s only $9.95/year for the online edition!

May. 20, 2010

Deep Creek Lake State Park officials have announced a new traffic pattern for boaters to use for direct access to the state park boat launch facilities. It is recommended that visitors towing boats or boat trailers go directly to the launch ramp access drive off of State Park Road (third left after crossing the Meadow Mountain Cove bridge) rather than entering the park at the day use gate.

“We have opened the launch ramp gate for 24-hour traffic, which we hope will relieve traffic congestion on State Park Road during the busy summer months,” said Ranger Mark Spurrier, assistant manager for the Deep Creek Lake Recreation Area. “Boaters no longer have to pass through the picnic and beach area entrance just to launch their boat onto the lake for the day.”

In addition to the change of access, boaters will no longer pay the day-use admission service charge, only the launch ramp service charge. There will be an employee at the ramp to collect the launch service charge and to answer questions.

“We feel it is a win/win situation,” said Spurrier. “The boaters will reach the launch ramp staging area faster and save a few dollars, and the beach visitors will not have to wait in boat traffic to enter the park.”

DEEP CREEK WATER LEVEL PETITION

Save Deep Creek Lake!
This seems to be a legit concern. I have had clients in shallow coves that have had to take their boat out in AUGUST because of the low water levels. Thanks to Mike Kennedy for bringing this to my attention:

“Here is a link to an online petition created by a group around the lake who have collected data the past few years that show Brookfield Power (the current owner of the dam and hydroelectric facility) is drawing the lake down faster and sooner than in years past. This has caused many of the property owners in the shallower coves to lose September and October as boating months.”
